Death Grips is a band inspired by industrial, techno, IDM, hardcore punk, and hip-hop.
This remains true. Yet this release put out by the group yesterday is 22 minutes long and very much structured like a prog epic, broken up into about five or six movements that all build upon one another. There's even some sonic influence at a few points in the song - 2:30 onward has a very heavenly, watery sound that is not unlike the likes of Animal Collective or some of Yes' synth-heavier songs.
Although some listeners may be initially off-put by the incredibly in-your-face, intricately produced, abrasive sound that Death Grips embodies, I strongly encourage people to give this a listen. This is the direction I've been hoping they'd take with their music. We saw glimpses of it on NOTM—which although not nearly as structured as this project still flowed together similarly—but this is on another level. I'll be very excited if this is what their next album sounds like.
