This is a quite deliberate selection (no, its not the sequence of releases) - something I was surprised by.

Almost voted for Cured. Not a bad record but Defector is better.

I almost voted for it too----the thing with the record is the vocals are bad---lot's of Steve's vocals were bad back then and if he had found a proper singer they would have sold better----late in his career he found his voice.

Defector, just ahead of Highly Strung.
Welcome to the middle of the film.

I honestly like all three, and I'm finding very hard to make a choice. I'll have to wait.

1. Defector
2. Highly Strung
3. Cured

OK - interesting - I will reveal why I selected these albums.  In rank order (believe it or not) these are the highest performing Hackett albums on the UK chart.  What is surprising is that Cured seemed to strike a chord with the wider record buying public and that his more esteemed albums; Spectral Mornings and Voyage of the Acolyte are ranked 4th and 5th respectively. Defector is Mr. Hackett's only top 10 album.

Defector by a mile as it completes the brilliant Acolyte/Please/Spectral/Defector set.  Things went downhill from there fast for awhile...

Defector by a fairly wide margin.. then Highly strung (I like a lots of the songs but the production lets it down) and then Cured is a bit of a mish mash with the odd good track..

Defector is a damn fine album (5 star without Time To Get Out and Sentimental Institution - why oh why does Steve do this goofball sh*t for ??).
Cured has its moments (wish he had a drummer for this one) and Highly Strung leaves me exactly that - highly strung, even Mosley didn't make this one a keeper for me more than 20 years ago.

Had to go with Highly Strung, a triumphant return to that full band sound after the distressing Cured. Defector could have been much more than it was if not for those sugary bits that eventually weakened it.
