Karen Carpenter each and every single possible time.
Just take a look at any of the stack of live performances of Karen on YouTube, she displays such incredible skill, range and versatility...even if a lot of the music is kind of daggy and gentle. And just look how happy she is when she plays...damn breaks my heart!
And as a singer? Karen had a subtle and effortless tone to her voice, really gave a lot of the Carpenters songs a gentle melancholic touch in many instances...although a lot of that might be in retrospect because of the way she passed away and the kind of things we found out later that troubled her in her adult life.
As someone who's suffered a lot of low self-worth and constant self-sabotage in my life, I've always connected with Karen and her voice. And even looking past that, she just created classy and smart pop music perfection with her brother...if only all pop music today was made so well and with such genuine heart.
