I'm not sure what to make of this band so far. Not super avant gardish so I'm not sure that's the right category. Not quite space rock or psych either imo so I would say eclectic prog. However, I'll let those who make these decisions have the final say on the category of course.

Anyway, here's the bandcamp link. https://theorvalians.bandcamp.com/releases

They have a proper website too. http://www.theorvalians.com/

Both the recently added MPXXIV & The Orvalians are excellent, I immediately bought The Orvalians, lovely stuff. I'd hardly call The Orvalians weird in RIO/Avant terms.

My wife would call "weird" Ummagumma...
The Orvalians are more or less a spin off of Rhun. I've listened again the the whole MPXXIV album and I was thinking of reviewing it, but my writer vein is quite dry currently.

Sorry, I probably should of not posted my comment.  Seems Rio/Avant genre is not my type of Progressive Rock music..  Sorry folks!!!Ouch

The word extreme probably classifies this genre very well in your PA classifications under genres...

The fact that we are more used to weird things doesn't make you wrong.

I must admit do not own a lot of Rio/Avant music but do own quite a lot of eclectic music...  Which probably sums up this title thread about Orvalians!...Smile

Happy to see your post and nothing at all wrong with your classification, at least you gave it a listen which is always a good thing. We just like things that go in that direction.

Glad to see they are now in. Now how about that other band I recently posted about on here. The one who's name starts with the letter H. ;)

...The countdown from your posting to my viewing is over now !!

Extended use of atonal moments in Ummagumma – that is, one could make sense of much of their improvs as chord sequences, or at least notes relating to each other and suggesting some modal scales & harmonic tensions; and see if and how harmonic knots will tighten or undo, or if it feels like one survives the storm, and hurdles that were slowing one down were cleansed... Things roll and one can enjoy some sublime rest etc, BUT I dare you explain how  f.i. piano clusters in last 80 seconds of Sisyphus Part 2 escape from atonality – the extended use of those moments makes some of that album's music more obscure and "weird" than what us other bands share !
