At the risk of raising hackles, I've posted this album cuz I've always thought it to be one of the more prog rockish albums from the 1980s: great topics, emotional stylized vocals and guitar play, as well as a refreshing, rather innovative way of using the new computerized technologies at that time. Plus, I am a HUGE fan of the creative sounds and work of guitarist Jamie West-Oram as well as of the vocals of Cy Curnin.

What are your opinions of this band/album?

(Fave song: I love so many, but I choose "Outside" for it's amazing guitar play.)

I haven't listened to this in quite a while, I usually listen to Phantoms or their live album React, but mostly Phantoms.

I will listen again and get back to this.

Not Prog but still a great album.

My first thought upon seeing this was "When was The Fixx added to PA?" Moved to General Music Discussions. The "Prog Forums" are primarily meant for acts in the ProgArchives database, not for just anything that is prog rockish. If the poll has multiple bands, then sure, I think it's fine to mention an act or two that isn't in PA but you think fits the poll. See THIS.

Great album. The Fixx were one of the few bright spots during the awful 80's.

I think the 80s were great, especally when it comes to RIO/Avant Prog, but to each his or her own. Was listening to the album earlier, nice album, but like Progosopher, I don't hear it as being Prog. I don't know it well enough yet to choose a favourite.

I know this site is anti-80s and particulary pop acts that came out under the new wave banner, but THE FIXX was one of the best of these bands IMHO. I personally find the debut "Shuttered Room" to be my favorite but "Reach The Beach" is a close second. "Saved By Zero" is probably one of my all time favorite tracks from them. What i love about THE FIXX is that even though their albums aren't all consistent, each one has a few really killer tracks and that even includes their 2012 album "Beautiful Friction."

I understand. You know me: one out of every three posts of mine seems to test the boundaries and end up being moved, removed, or ignored. Just remaining consistent...

and, if you know me you know that I'm all about inclusion: whatever's good enough for 1958's Kind of Blue is good enough for Mew...

New wave to me but I'll admit the keys give it a prog vibe to a degree. I haven't heard it in ages though and don't remember the songs. I remember thinking it was good though.

Wasn't big on this one too much, although the first track was a great single.
I did like their followup Phantoms a lot though.

One of my guilty pleasures. I prefer Shuttered Room to this album, but still one of the better artsy pop albums from the 1980s.

At the time, I didn't like much of the new wave type music that came out in the 80s but now I have huge nostalgia for the era and The Fixx definitely fits into that.

Back when it just came out, I heard "Phantom Living" playing in a retail store in New England called Lechmere (long since defunct), and once I found out who it was, I bought the LP immediately just for that. Turned out to be a good buy...lot's of cool songs (I particularly dug "In Suspense", great guitar-work!).

Never really listened to a whole album...but did hear the radio songs but I preferred Echo and the Bunnymen, Ultravox, and Simple Minds...

Sorry if I came across as patronising with my post, didn't mean to, I just felt an explanation for my action was deserved.

I like Kind of Blue, but would personally rather see it not appear much in prog polls. On the other hand, I applaud anyone's who mentions Get Up With It and Big Fun in a Prog poll (not to mention various other Davis album, but I love those two and they rarely get mentioned). It's kind of strange that we have this rule that anything listed in a Prog category is fair game for the Prog loungeseven if it's not Prog at all, but not Prog music that isn't in PA. So just because Miles Davis is in JRF for his late 60s through 70s albums, every album of his is under JRF due to the complete discography policy and every album is officially fair game for prog polls even if it has nothing to with the inclusion.

Anyway, trying to listen to this album more since I want to say something about the album and choose a track, but none of the tracks are connecting with me (I knew some of the hits, but thought the lesser know stuff would show a more experimental, deeper, or adventurous and eclectic side than it is). I do like various New Wave and Synthpop music (I mean, I grew up with Gary Numan, though his early Tubeway Music is a different beast despite any similar labels).

One of the more unique 80s bands. I saw them live a few years back and it was far from an 80s nostalgia show. I’m a big fan of the first 3 albums but also of the single from the 4th, Secret Separation, which I think is their crowning achievement. I have the 12” single which stretches the song out to 8 minutes and I love it.

PS I voted for The Sign of Fire in this poll. Considered voting for Outside.

Deeper and Deeper from the Streets of Fire soundtrack kills anything on 'Beach. Saw the band open for Peter Gabriel in the early '80s, and they were quite good!
