The song is very nice with jazzy Caravan-like hints, but the lyrics are quite odd, because my english is poor and it's too difficult to transcribe by ear correctly... Please, help to correct:
Correction? The last verse may contain "Don’t Beat So On the Horses" -- not "houses". It is actually the name of another track on the same album. That makes more sense now!

it has to be "maid", not "mate", else the following "she" makes no sense. a typical pronunciation problem for a native German speaker because in the German language there is no difference between the pronunciation of "d" and "t" at the end of a word or at the end of a syllable that is followed by a syllable that starts with a consonant. example: "Leitstern" ("guiding star") and "Leidstern" ("harm star") are pronounced the same.
"there's someone" is actually "for someone"

On the German material I would defer to the ladies ... their translations, explanation of the linguistics and very detailed understanding of it is really strong and should be appreciated more.
In other examples, it is not quite the same thing, and GONG was writing a lot of lyrics, and if there is one thing that Daevid Allen was aware of, was that lyrics could easily be treated as some sort of work trying to hide something, and he always stuck to the "storytelling" side of things to prevent that. Pierre's lyrics are suffering from a poor translation in my book, but I have not read and compared them yet ... and I'm extremely familiar with the translations into many languages through my own father's work into at least 35 languages ... and some translations are simply horrific to my imagination as they tear into the fabric of the work in its attempt to come alive ... those things can't come alive, when the "point" is aimed elsewhere in a translation ... but this is one of the difficulties with translations ...
And one of the worst crimes in translation? You ain't seen nothing yet, until you check out some Shakespeare translations ... makes you want to ban that person to a room full of the foul smells from the Globe latrines!

I have no idea, I use Google Translate a lot!
Google's translations are "literal", meaning just word for word, and there is no sentence or usage to explain it. They are not always bad, but the literal translations lose the emotional and the cultural flavor of the piece and the place so quick as to really hurt the work.
Elsewhere, I explained and showed how the translation of my father's one piece of work, was just horrible, and it started with the "pointed" comment in the Preface ... when it was inferred that it was a political statement ... and at this pace, he might as well have been telling a child's story, and all academics will think it was something against the political system of Joe Schmuck!
The worst translations of all are Shakespeare that I have ever seen ... because you can't keep the Iambic Puta Meter going in Italian, Portuguese, French or German! Some have a nice emotional touch, but some are trying to make sure the well known "phrases" and "expressions" stay the same, and consequently break into the completeness of the work.
Now for punishment ... go listen to the Spanish Version of DRACULA with Bela Lugosi ... and while you know the original really well, the expression in Spanish actually comes off OK ... but this might have been because Bela was probably very well aware of the differences in various languages in Europe and the Latin flavored languages, would be kinda ... "next door", and something that he/others would have learned all the dirty works as kids in school (for example)!
It doesn't take away from the original at all ... but you can see how the different wording times out with the effects which were delayed to allow for the language to make it ... !!! A far out study ... and worthy of listening to!
