James Labrie has been said to reach 5 octaves...but that was in his early days.

Axl?! I giggled...

I believe you read an article. I'm not gonna read it, i don't care for Axl anymore, I don't even think he's a good vocalist, that's why I laughed.

I can't stand Axl Rose. I thought he was an average singer in a crap band.

Not sure of the technicalities but Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor both had impressive range. For me, it's more about control at the higher ends of their range, rather than just being able to squeal or scream really high, and the Queen guys had that impressive vocal control.

Thijs van Leer of Focus could also reach dizzy heights.

Focus singer is an impressive example. He didn't come to my mind. On Hocus Pocus, he uses about 3 octaves of voice, I guess. While performing live and sitting, using 3 octaves of voice in a single song is nothing but very impressive.

Minnie Ripperton's version would have been interesting.

As for male singers with the best vocal range, I'd vote for David Byron of Uriah Heep, or the singer with Pavlov's Dog, who sounds like he's inhaled too much helium. Smile

I thought of Annie Haslam also, but her range is 5 octaves, apparently.  She sure can go high, I jokingly say she could break glass.

These days maybe more like 3 or 4. I don't think she can hit the high notes like she used to be able to.

^^ Minnie Ripperton, someone else who died tragically young. I have some of the early Rotary Connection recordings where her performances are pretty amazing.

Didn't Mariah Carey do a prog album in '81 at the tender age of eleven ?

Don't know if Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet) qualifies as prog but it was said he had a 41/2 -5 octave range and once shattered a microphone in the studio while making an early lp.
