I would LOVE some help to appreciate better the drumming of Pierre Moerlen. Could you please suggest some specific songs and/or albums in which his prowess and skills are on display. I've heard Gazeuse is a good place to start. Any others?

I'm a big fan of Pierre, however I find it difficult to recommend something as I love his drumming everywhere. Gazeuse is great, as are the albums around it, Shamal, Expresso II, Downwind.  The Live album by Pierre Moerlen's Gong has some very good drumming, too (not so much the solo, but the other stuff).

Thanks, Lewian!^
As I've never really liked Gong music much, these are all albums that I've never listened to, so THANKS!

You're right! That is some IMPRESSIVE drumming! I guess I've always been carried away by the extraordinary voice and performance of Richard Sinclair on that song--plus the drums kind of get relegated to the background behind the voice, bass, and keys once the singing enters. Again, thank you for providing me with a contextual experience for hearing the impressive skills of Mr. Pyle.

I am REALLY enjoying this process: of showcasing musicians' talents through specific song recommendations.

THANKS!!!

It's a great idea. Here is another drummer, (not Pierre) that is relatively unknown.

Sorry that I'm high jacking this thread. I'll stop.

that would have been my suggestion too. Pierre is absolutely awesome here. the way the bass drum comes in at the beginning alone...

I also highly recommend Gong's "Live au Bataclan". Pierre is brilliant on that album

Very little discussion of Pierre Moerlen's Gong - which seem to be almost criminally overlooked among the prog fraternity.  I was lucky to catch them live in 1980 before Pierre joined the first Mike Oldfield tour (check out 'Exposed').  Dip into any of the PMG albums to enjoy Pierre's drumming (perhaps start with 'Downwind' where Pierre has a go at singing as well...)

Same here; I saw Pierre four times live (also with Tribute and Allen's Gong in the 90s), and although I like him on albums, it doesn't really come close to the joy of seeing him playing. Unfortunately there's hardly anything on youtube that reproduces this properly.

Nobody mentioned "Time is the Key"? I particularly like Pierre's drumming in Arabesque Intro/Arabesque and Esnuria Two (which kind of flow together)...
