FINALLY SOME PEOPLE WHO KNOW OF MR PHILLIPS!! well im only 17 so bear with me please, i own Faces, Second Contribution, Contribution, Collaboration, Furthermore and Shawn Phillips greatest hits on vinyl, well the greatest hits is cd. shawn phillips, i would consider him Folk/Jazz/Rock with a few progressive elements thrown in, his Faces and Second Contribution albums should be on here. He seamlessly blends so many different musical styles into one conglomeration of music, which when you analyze it, to be quite frank, confuses  you as to why it works. such as one song where he combines elements of country and blues and what appears to be hawaiin(sp) influences as well. i find his voice to be mesmerizing and absolutely gorgeous. the one downfall is his stuff is incredibly hard to find.

    Shawn lived in Austin, TX for many years, so I got to talk to him a few times before he moved to South Africa a few years ago (his wife is from there, and wanted to return home).  He received a LOT of airplay in the 70's, his albums were well-received critically, A & M Records promoted him well enough that his sales figures were respectable.  The reason he has been discarded by today's radio programmers?  He never had hit singles.  He was always considered an "album artist", and in fact DJ's would usually play an entire side of, say, "Second Contribution", his most popular album.  He always put on a great concert, whether he had a band with him or playing solo with a bunch of pre-programmed synths backing him.  The last few years in Austin, he played the Cactus Cafe with noted guitarist Van Wilks sitting in on lead.  Most of his albums have been reissued on Wounded Bird Records.  Prog-Folk might describe his style, but he incorporated many diverse influences, such as jazz, country and even electronic music.  He came from Ft. Worth, but most people assumed he was British because of the musicians he worked with and his lyrics.  He played sitar on Donovan's early recordings, and taught George Harrison beginning lessons before George learned from Ravi Shankar.  This is one guy who deserved much more attention than he ever got.  He has a voice like no other, and is a fantastic acoustic and electric guitarist.  I would recommend "Second Contribution", "Collaboration", "Faces" and "Furthermore" as his best albums.
