Dark, cerebral, hypnotic « minimal » music

Phill Niblock is an Indiana-born (1933) New York-based avantgarde composer and multimedia artist, founder of Experimental Intermedia. Niblock's program is, fundamentally, to create music without rhythm or melody, by slow accumulation of microtones…Volume is the key! The louder you play it the better it is. Unvarying notes generating fields of almost physical energy. The aural equivalent of a huge abstract expressionist colour field painting. Although each piece starts off identifiable (eg as played by trombones), after the first ten minutes the overtones are winning, and something massive is resonating inside your inner core. Horrifyingly effective experiments. Undoubtedly, best listened to in the confines of a New York loft apartment, the only urban space environment large enough to contain the massiveness of these acoustic blocks.

Selected discography:

- Four Full Flutes (XI 101)

- Music by Phill Niblock (XI 111)

- A Young Person's Guide to Phill Niblock (Blast First BFFP102CD)

- Touch Works, for Hurdy Gurdy and Voice (Touch TO 49)

- Ghosts and Others (Sedimental SEDCD 029)

Hi Phil,

i checked into the Mediatheque and unfortunately found absolutely nothing!

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

If you definitely want to get in touch with Nyblock's music and others "weird" minimalist "drone" composers I can eventually send to you a few copies...for me it depends how much it costs to send it in Belgium
