Well, well, g'day to all of you here. I am a (still) young person from Sweden who now decided to join this site in order to meet other progressive rock lovers and broaden my musical horizons. Also, it was quite frustrating speaking about bands hardly any one of my friends had heard of and refuse to like when I do my best to force it onto them.

I came to listen to progressive rock thanks to (believe it or not) the Genesis album "We can't dance". I liked it, so I bought some more of the later Genesis albums, and then one day, visiting Stockholm, I found and decided to try my luck with "Nursery Cryme" and "Foxtrot". I was confused at first by the different sound, but after a few listenings, I got stuck and became a complete Genesis-freak. It took me some years, but finally I had laid my hands on all studio albums, and I constantly look for live albums and bootlegs that I don't have to prices I can afford. Sadly, Genesis and prog albums over all are quite hard to come over where I live, and I rarely order things via the internet (even though I couldn't keep myself from buying "The Genesis Archives" that way).

After being a more or less fundamentalistic Genesis-listener for two years or so, I decided to try to find some other bands of the same kind. It was a slow process (I'm a bit parsimonious, so I seldom try and buy something I haven't heard before) but the latest year(s) it's gone faster, and among my favourite prog bands I can now include:

Pink Floyd
Ixthuluh
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
The Flower Kings
King Crimson
Focus
Van Der Graaf Generator
Jethro Tull
Steve Hackett

These are the bands I've heard the most of (which doesn't say that much actually, except in the case of Ixthuluh, where I've heard almost, if not all of it)

Otherwise, my taste in music is quite broad. I like what might generally been seen as "strange", "not mainstream" and "how-the-heck-can-you-call-this-music?", and genre-wise I can mention punk (especially Swedish punk), progg (Swedish style of music, not to be confused with progressive rock, or should it? There's an interesting discussion, I think), metal, indie-pop, classic, electronica and various "alternative" artists, mostly Swedish ones.  Oh, why not drop som band names just when I'm at it, to make this post even longer? (genre information is my own opinion, faulty as it may be, oh and"progg" and "neoprogg" means progg as in "Swedish progg" not "progressive rock")

Arch Enemy -death metal
All Girl Summer Fun Band -indie pop
Asta Kask -punk
A Quiet Life (If you've ever heard these, please tell me, because then you might be a fellow wotmaniac) -pop/rock, prog elements
Anti-Flag -punk
Bob Hund -"neoprogg"
Charta 77 -punk
De Lyckliga Kompisarna (DLK) -punk
Den Förlorade Generationen -"neoprogg"
Doktor Kosmos -"neoprogg"
Dia Psalma -punk/depressive folk rock
Eld Attack Krossa (EAK) -punk
Gunder Hägg / Blå Tåget -progg
The Hidden Cameras -gay pop
Hoola Bandoola Band -progg
Kurt-Sunes Med Berits (KSMB) -punk
Lastkaj 14 -punk
Manowar -power metal
MID -punk
Mullhippiar Neffonsson -"neoprogg"
Nationalteatern -progg
Ninja Magic -ninja speed metal
Pluxxus -electronica
Puss -electronica
Philemon Arthur & The Dung -progg
The Present Darkness -electronica
Pi -"neoprogg"
Radioaktiva Räker -punk
Röyksopp -electronica
Sportlov -black metal
System Of A Down -it's some sort of metal...
Stearin Light -"neoprogg"
Senap -punk
Strebers -punk
Vaya Con Dios -jazz, jazzy pop?

If you've read all this way, I could as well tell you a bit more about me than my taste (or lack of it) in music. I live in the central part of Sweden (Närke), politically I identify myself as a socialistic eco-anarchist (whatever), I'm interested in theatre, art and other "cultural" things, I'm a scoutmaster and, in theory, still an active practicer of football. I enjoy reading and writing and being outdoors. In the winter, I try to get as much time downhill skiing as I can afford (which sadly isn't much) and all around the year, I enjoy the company of the forest where I probably will spend quite a lot of time in the future (as much as there is one). I'm a firm believer in the principle of "if the law is wrong, break it", and when I'm not psychically ill (which isn't very often these days...) I enjoy the company of others. You could say that I'm a bit of a crazy hermit, but some of the voices in my head would disagree with that.

Welcome. I'm all in favour of people who call themselves parsimonious joining this forum and I like the sound of Philemon Arthur & The Dung.

Well thanks to both of you.

NutterAlert: when you say that you like the sound of Philemon Arthur & The Dung, do you mean that you like the sound of the band's name or the music they're playing? Since it says you're from Great Britain, that comment made me a bit curious.

I like the name, never heard the music though.

Oh, you have certainly missed something, then. They won the Swedish equivalent of a Grammy in 1975, I think it was, and the Grammy Awards were cancelled as a protest for fourteen years after that. They are not a band for people without self-distance.
