 Topic: The Bonzo Dog Band

As bands go, you'd be hard pressed to find one deader, non? With their chief command long since gone (RIP, Viv) and all the rest bar Neil Innes having all but abandoned music about 30 years ago, why therefore are they playing a gig at the London Astoria this January.
Christ knows, but I'VE GOT TICKETS!

*nods* I very nearly didn't manage to get any either. I'm sooooooooo excited! Before I got into prog I listened to them religiously, and still give them a spin quite often. It'll be different without Viv, of course (who is incidentally one of my idols), but it still promises to be one helluva gig! Fingers crossed that they'll play Trouser Press, eh?

Sounds good TP. I don't know much about the Bonzos, but I know Neil Innes from The Rutles -his pastiches of Beatle songs are just brilliant.

I dunno - the Bonzos didn't really produce what you'd call Prog Rock, now, did they?
Agreed, they were/are way out there, but "Urban Spaceman" and "Monster Mash" don't really have that "Prog" vibe I'm lookin' for...
(And I know there's more to the Bonzos than those two tracks...) 
Fantastic band.

Nah I wouldn't include them really; I suppose they were forerunners of the kind of English whimsy people like Kevin Ayers peddled later, but Kevin's music was more in tune with the Canterbury prog sound, whereas Bonzos kind of lampooned 20s/30s dance band/ jazz music. The Bonzos I've seen compared to The Mothers Of Invention but I've never really bought into that comparison either.
I'm not a particular fan really of the Bonzos, but I like the odd song.

I remember from my childhood days, they were the highlight of a TV show call "Please do not adjust your set", a sort of forerunner for kids to Monty Python.

Yes, they later removed the doo-dah.
Did you know you can get "Do Not Adjust Your Set" on DVD? It's on my to-buy list.
And why is everyone suddenly discussing the progginess of the Bonzos? I mean, I put this in Non-Prog for a reason, chaps...

The Doo Dah part of the band name came from Dada, the absurdist art movement that was the precursor to surrealism. The Bonzos were very much an art school band, and references to visual art in general and Dada and Surrealism in particular can be found throughout their work. A good example is 'The Bride Stripped Bare By The Bachelors' from Keynsham, which takes its title from Duchamps' 'The Bride Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors, Even', a version of which can be seen in the Tate Modern. Saxophonist Roger Ruskin Spear has since had a successful career as a painter (or at least as successful as a painter can be in this day and age).

I have Gorilla that has Intros/outros, jollity farm, I'm Bored and others on it.
Guaranteed to raise a smile everytime I put it on. Behind all the lunacy they were good musicians.

Named from the the cartoon character of the 30's'/40's Bonzo Dog. Last gig at this university - & about time somebody put a brass plaque up here to celebrity a special band's demise. At the same time there also should be a plaque for our radio station for discovering and popularising Kraftwerk and Autobahn - 6 to 9 months before Radio One!
