Derek Bailey, free improvising avant-garde guitarist has died (25th), at the age of 75.

He has links to the prog scene, as Lol Coxhill & Fred Frith were in Company, his ever changing band of inprovisational musicians.  He also formed the record label Incus in 1970.  He also has worked with Pat Metheny, John Zorn and David Sylvian amongst others.

I am unfamiliar with his music personally, so I was curious to know how avant garde it was and whether any of it is prog?

Derek died of Motor Neuron disease which he had been suffering with for some time.

Requiscat in pace Derek Bailey (29/01/1930 - 25/12/2005)

I was only reading up on him and listening to his music a month or so ago. Difficult stuff, but very lyrical. Definitely too far out for it to be labelled even as RIO, in my opinion. Peace be with his soul.
