GRATEFUL DEAD Fillmore West 1969
Just ordered this 3cd live... I pray for the sound to be good. I expect the performance to be excellent, according to what i've read. Does someone else knows it? http://www.rhino.com/store/ProductDetail.lasso?Number=73193 |

It is a very good live album, with long psychedelic jams, but my favourite is "Live Dead", one of the best Live album of that fantastic period.

I have it and like it a lot, I don't think you'll be disappointed. These discs were culled from the same concerts that produced Live Dead. |

So its really the "Live/Dead" session... Fantastic...as all the best pieces are in. Is it a "Hdcd" remaster? I also do love this one: (1968) |

Yes it is indeed a HDCD remaster. There are alternate versions of the songs which appear on Live/Dead...its like a "best of" of the 4 night Fillmore '69 stand. It also contains my favorite Dead line-up, the septet of Garcia>Weir>Lesh>Pigpen>Kreutzmann>Ha rt>Constanten.
I like TFTV ^ also. Got any Dick's Pick's? I have 8 of them, 1,2,4,8,10,16,18,23. |

Thanks for the infos.
I bought one volume off Dick picks from the same period (69, i don't remember which one, maybe the 19th), but sound was too poor and i sent it back. Among the ones you quote, can you recommand some, and what about the sound quality? Edited by oliverstoned |

You're welcome! One of the caveats of the Dick's Picks series is that they are "as is" recordings. In other words, the sound quality isn't always great, and they tell you this up front. Not that it's necessarily bad, but if sound quality is a primary concern to you, then the DP series may not be for you. Personally, I don't have a problem with it, given the intensity of the performances. That is, I find that the performances outweigh the sound quality in every volume that I own. Obviously it's just my personal taste. Plus, I have this thing about "complete concert recordings" and several of the volumes I own are just that. Prior to purchasing any of the DP's I own, I had spent an extensive amount of time on dead.net reading reviews of the series by deadheads. This database of reviews was subsequently canned by the website admin, but I think they've started it up again. Anyway, I based my purchase choices on the reviews plus the song selections on each volume. I would recommend any of the volumes I mentioned. You can go to dead.net and check out each volume for year, band, song selection, song times, etc. I would highly recommend doing this. If I had to recommend one for you, it'd be volume 8. This was one of the most prized bootlegs ever among deadheads because the first disc features an entirely acoustic set. The second set is also quite intense.

Thanks a lot for the advices. Indeed, i've already seen the dead.net database with reviews.
I'll have another look at it and maybe will order volume 8. |

There's an article in "Stereophile" this month about GRATEFUL DEAD Fillmore West 1969, and they talk about the Dick Picks too.

I was actually able to download this off Archive last year when it was still considered just another recorded bootleg show (since the Dead always let there fans exchange there show) if they kept the sound the same as the official release on my eyes its good, but in other peoples veiw its not the best.

slightly off topic: oliver, it must really be frustrating to be both an audiophile AND a deadhead. I'm fairly forgiving when it comes to sound quality, but even I have some trouble listening to many of my Dead albums.

Yes, in a way. For example, there's a little harshness on
"from the vaults", even if it's a HDCD remaster. But i manage to enhance that by recording it on tape, using such a tapedeck: It gives back the music. Edited by oliverstoned |

... yes even "the official ones Anthem of the Sun which admittedly was an experiment with live/studio collages and Bear's Choice drive me nuts I am just about the only Dead fan I know who's contented with the studio albums (have em all except for Built To Last) and maybe only five official live albums (Live/Dead, Grateful Dead, Europe 72, Reckoning and Without A Net) ... more than enough for me ... |

Even if the early studio albums were excellent, Grateful dead was a scene band, and the best instrumentals developments were on scene. That's why these recent reissues are so great.

The Stereophile's article is very interesting as it's by Dead's archivist.
Among others, they said they have enough material to release Cd's during 20 years. |
