Jack and Meg. Musical revolutionaries? Rock without a bass? Not new, but hey, good stuff. There's nothing average about the White Stripes. The riffs, subject matter, structure. Raw, old, fresh, abstract and straight forward, the Stripes are the freshest breath in the phelm filed lungs of rock in a long time. Balls out rock like the White Stripes are EXTREMLEY hard too find today. Those who do not understand rock and only follow trends will reject the Stripes, out of sheer ignorance, they are not at fault. The MTV generation has inflicted irreparable damage to the musical intellect of todays youth. Children today are trained too follow suite, the White Stripes do not play this game. Their music is not radio friendly, not designed for "hits". It's from the heart, INSPIRED rock and roll. The Stripes music is full of little intricacies and changes that constantly keep them interesting. You don't know what to expect when listening to them. This being said, do you think that the White Stripes are in any prog related catagorie, modern or otherwise? |

I like them and have 'Elephant' but they are a million miles away from prog IMO. |

not prog. You (the topic starter) should not try to link progressiveness and quality. Just because something is not "prog rock" doesn't mean that it's of a lesser quality ... a good part of my all time favorite albums is not prog, and that's a very good thing. BTW: Rate their album on my website ... I'm curious what the genre label will be. Maybe I'll rate it too! |

I have 'Elephant' too, and I was not exactly blown away to be honest. They are certainly unique in todays music scene, but I dont think they prog related. They may not choose typical song structures, and they may use old instruments and equipment, but their riffs and rhythims are too basic to fit into any prog mould, certainly in the stuff I've heard.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I just don't see what the fuss is about White Stripes. They're not especially original - The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion were playing a bass-free rock/blues/hardcore hybrid a good 10 years before Jack and Meg got started, while the wonderful but largely forgotten Britsh duo Medicine Head played a far more original take on da blooz back in the 1970s. Try the following experiment: play any song by the White Stripes, then listen to Red House by Jimi Hendrix. That should settle the matter.

Yes, I got that. But accepting that they are not prog doesn't diminish their quality, that's what I was (am) trying to say. |

If you're a fan of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, check out Boss Hog. Their second album is phenomenal! |

Not prog (no moog synths or spiderwebs of guitar like Howe/Hackett). A great band though! I have all their albums and DVD. They could be the new Blue Cheer.

They are like a modern Blue Cheer. I not a huge fan, but there music is very original and representative of what rock'n'roll is. They have progressed though, look at how they evolved in there new album, Get behind me Satan. They have songs with no guitar, lots of mallets and fancy percussion. It's very intresting and I reccomend it. But still, not prog. |

There is no phrase in the English language that I detest more than that one. I do like the White Stripes, though. |

ugh! I cant belive those talantless fools evan get their name here! they are a useles waste of space, and neither can play there instrument. As a professional musician (scraping by on a drum teachers sallery) I despare whenever I see meg white play. I have spent 10 years getting good at my craft, and get no recognision and she has spent a total of 10 mins leaning to play and gets millions of pouns per performance. Yes im bitter, but with good reason. |
