Salisbury and Look At Yourself
let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

Salisbury for me ...

the surrounding albums are all excellent also ... I think my order is

1) Salisbury
2) Demons And Wizards
3) Magician's Birthday
4) Look At Yourself

from then on, it's a little bit of a gap to Very 'Eavy and Sweet Freedom and then another gap to Wonderworld, Return To Fantasy and High N' Mighty

even the best non-Byron albums, Firefly, Abomninog, Sea Of Light don't match up to the worst Byron albums IMO ...

PS: Moving the thread
"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

My name says it all, "Demons and Wizards" for me, with "Look at yourself" very close behind. D&W was the first album by the classic Uriah Heep line up. I believe a lot of people will be surprised by this album if they have not heard it before.

For what it's worth ... and I know I've mentioned this before () but when I interviewed them (separately of course!) in the late 90s ... Mick Box picked Salisbury and Ken Hensley picked Demons And Wizards

One of my all time favourite acts; hard to pick just one album as I like more or less all of their albums. However, 'Demons and Wizards' is their finest hour for most and I'll go along with that. Every track is pretty much perfect and it's over far too quickly for me. That album is followed by Firefly, Look At Yourself, Sea Of Light and Salisbury.

Interestingly though, Mick Box recently said that 'Abominog' was his favourite of their albums in a Classic Rock magazine interview, so his opinion may have changed since you interviewed him, Martin!

Ken always says, though, that 'Demons...'; is his favourite, alongside 'High and Mighty' (an offbeat choice, but you understand why he chose it when every song has Hensley's name credited, mostly solo too- indeed, Hensley has said it was like a solo album but with the band on it- I now love this album myself too), and the '73 'Live' album.

It's really diffcult to choose their one best album. There are minimum 4-5 "best" albums, but if I had to rate these are my favourites:

1.Look at Yourself
2.Salisbury
3.Very 'Eavy Very 'Umble
4.The Magician´s Birthday

Tough choice but I'm going to say Demons & Wizards.

Demons and Wizards started their fantasy trip, so I choose that one.
