These are bands I consider to be quite nice/extremely good:

Tool (ambient metal)
Coheed and Cambria (emo rock, bit Floyd-influenced)
Amplifier (space rock with hard rock influences)
Metallica (who doesn't know them)
Dredg (simply stunning art rock band with great melodies and good live sound!)
Opeth (progressive death metal WinkEvil Smile)
Within Temptation (good live band, though their music isn't quite original, but enjoyable)
Evergrey (dark metal)

Thanks Tristan.  I'm not a fan of Metallica.

But I've got a Co&Ca album and I like some of it, but dislike some of it, so I'm not sure about them.  The emo parts are very off-putting.

Amplifier I'm not aware of, but a few people have recommended them, the same applies for dredg, so I think I'll try and see both bands.

I'm mainly going to see Opeth, as I really like what I've heard.

Evergrey I've tried, but they don't work for me, I'll have another go before I go, just in case they click.

Within Temptation are like Nightwish apparently, so not sure if I'll enjoy them...

Metallica / Cathedral / Alice in Chains / Killing Joke are great bands.

Metallica still give great live shows.
I have never heard Alice in Chains with another singer though
