OK, we agree that he isn´t prog, but saying he can hardly play and that he does simple things at high speed, that is just plain ridiculous.

That depends on how skilled a musician you are, and how big your knowledge of music is. There's so much mpre you need to know to be a great guitarplayer than just w**king scales all day long.

I am a skilled musician, and I have a good knowledge of music. He can play, and he's a good musician. Not a good composer, but a great performer ... and unfortunately he stopped evolving really soon in his career. But in the area of neoclassical metal shred he's one of the best.

BTW: Listen to him play on the first song of Derek Sherinian - Black Utopia.Clap

I´m not keen on him as a person though.
I saw a show of his in 2001 where he played the star spangled banner at least ten times to irritate the Brazilian audience. Well there was a lot of booeing and at the end of the show he left the stage saying "God bless America, and f*** you all!"

Some of his best compositions were "Icararus Dream Suite" "Far Beyong the sun" "Crying" "Prelude to April"
All great compositions, but I agree a lot of his stuff is very repetitive.

His reputation for being difficult and arrogant is legendary.

^ except for Satch (who I think is prog related at best) I agree with you. Malmsteen is purely neoclassical, and the only reason for including him is the presence of other purely neo-classical metal bands ... most prominently: Rhapsody. But I'd rather remove Rhapsody than including Malmsteen ... LOL

I agree with you too.  Perhaps we need to take another look at our addition of Rhapsody. Confused

I think Malmsteen is a Prog Related artist... It is a StarStarStarStarStar guitar hero!!!

Malmsteen plays some great music. I'm sure he'll be added to the archives sooner or later, like it or not.
