It seems to me that among my friends who do not enjoy prog and those who do enjoy prog, they all think very highly of the classic DP lineup (Glover, Gillan, Paice, Blackmore, Lord).

They were incredible musicians in my opinion, and made some truly fantastic music, much of it very progressive (and much of it quite the opposite).

What do you lot think?

I enjoy their music a bunch, but I think the MKI period was better yet.

My thoughts exactly... You don't simply enjoy DP's music, you LOVE it, OK? And don't get me started at this time of morning, when you already can't breathe because of the humidity...LOL

^^ Deep breaths GR, deep breaths.

All of my friends seem to enjoy them, as do I. I'm quite certain that "Smoke On The Water's" riff causes a chemical release in the brain causing one to band his head. I don't know how anyone could not like that song.

I have called myself a Deep Purple fan since 1970 when i first heard "In Rock", i was blown away, never heard anything like it since "Led Zep 1". All the Mk.2 lineup were virtuosos in their field and all contributed equally to the Purple sound. There have been other excellent musicians in the Purple ranks but the Gillan, Glover, Lord, Paice and Blackmore line-up are my favourite, when they were on top form they produced one of the best live albums of all time. I think by 1973 the band were exhausted from extensive touring, inner conflicts resulted from this and showed up on "Who do we think we are" (in retrospect not such a bad album after all), they should have been allowed to rest and pursue other projects but the management were concerned they'd never retrieve their popularity with the fans back again, in hindsight a totally wrong assumption.   I have seen Purple live on three occasions and never been disappointed, and they never put in a bad show - even on one occasion at a festival when it was raining heavily and Ritchie came on stage in Wellington boots!! I follow the band to this day and always will - ROCK ON PURPS!Thumbs Up

I enjoy them, but I prefer Mark I (Lord, Evans, Simper, Blackmore and Paice)
