My god! Just discovered this song. Mind-blowing! Is this the first prog epic or what? I suggest everyone to hear it... NOW!

You've just had a heavy session of electroshock therapy, and you're more relaxed than you've been in weeks.

It is certainly an early proto-prog composition, one of the best.  You might be interested to know that Transatlantic - a "supergroup" comprised of members of Marillion, Flower Kings, Spock's Beard and Dream Theater - covered the composition on one of their albums, and did a damn good job.

Peace.

Yeah, I heard about that. I tried to hear the song from the "it was all the way back in 68" angle, and I didn't expect much... Man, was I surprised!

“Ars longa vita brevis” was released 1 month before “In Held Twas In I” in the UK but the latter was released earlier in the US and Germany! Therefore “In Held…” is probably the first symphonic prog epic/suite. However, The Collectors released an epic in 1968 which is called "What Love (Suite)" which clocks in at 19:15. Not sure of it's exact release date (and haven't heard it! - yet!).

In late 67 Jefferson Aiplane released After Bathing At Baxter's which had the 13 songs into five "Suites". None of the "suites" had more than three "songs" as subsections

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword
