This message appeared on the Porcupine Tree website today, you have been warned....

Recording PT shows - the lowdown!
09-11-2006
Porcupine Tree will embark on their only 2006 tour later this week. The format of the show this time around will be a little different, with half the show dedicated to material from the new live DVD "Arriving Somewhere....", but the other half being brand new, as yet unrecorded material, something that will allow these works in progress to evolve as the tour goes on.

In view of the fact that we live in the age of file sharing and download culture, we are asking for consideration from all show attendees in *not* attempting to record the show in any way. While the band try to discourage taping of its shows, we do acknowledge that there are those fans who like to document and share PT live performances, and as such we have a fairly liberal policy with trading of recordings among the PT fan community, as long as no money is exchanged between parties. But in this case we hope that fans will understand our feeling that people should experience this new music for the first time in performance, and not in the form of unauthorised audience recordings. It's one thing to hear a substandard live recording of a piece already familiar, but quite another to hear something new for the first time in such poor circumstances, so if you are unable to get along to a show this time, please be patient and wait for the album versions!

Now the ugly part...as there are bound to be some fans who even after reading this will feel compelled to record the show, we regret that there will be a greater effort made to stop illegal recording on this tour, and a zero tolerance policy as regards anyone found doing so. If anyone is discovered recording a show their recording media will be confiscated, and they will be escorted from the venue, missing the rest of the show with no refund forthcoming. We therefore ask anyone that had planned to tape these shows to reconsider in deference to the band's feelings on this matter, and your own enjoyment of the show.

We really do appreciate your understanding and cooperation on this. This is quite an exciting experiment for us and we look forward to seeing you on the tour!

PT

I think the measurements are understandable. A bit hard but still understandable.

btw. does that mean that half the concert will be deadwing songs and the other half new ones? i mean they wouldnt leave the stage without playing trains, would they?

This seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Nah,half the show will be the DVD set and half will be new stuff. A bold move but PT have never been afraid to go their own way...

Rules are meant to be broken, I am sure there will be people recording the show, particularly the exclusive new material. Isn't it obvious that all the hundreds of PTree fans will be straving to hear yet unreleases music of their band, especially since the band can NOT, physically, cover every country or continent in their tour? There are places in the world where people are unable to buy non-mainstream top 20/50 music for a reasonable price, let alone the ability of seeing their favourite musicians play live.

It is their decision, but to me it is clear Porcupine Tree has made a decision AGAINST their fans, although to the full content of their own pride and ego.

I think that's unfair Ivan, especially since they have been so generous in the past. They are developing the unheard material during the tour. I think their stance is entirely reasonable.

That's reasonable.

...but then again, I'm going to one of those shows, so I don't have to wait until the next album to hear the new material.  :P

To me, most people that record shows are fairly experienced in evading detection, so with that in mind, this may actaully be a 'challenge' to many and also not only make those recording MORE valuable because of the new material but also because of the inherent rarity it will provide.

It is almost like waving a $100 bill at a bootlegger, "come to our gig, you are guaranteed to either win or lose". Steve should not have said a thing, now the cats out poor PT fans too far from the gigs will be paying out their asses to hear the new songs.

Well here's to hoping that anyone who does snag a show (and I'm sure that a few will be recorded) are the people I'm used to dealing with--strict traders only.

Maybe this is a Snakes on a Plane scenario.  They try out the songs live, get feedback and maybe tweak them or change them somewhat so they are even better when they go into the studio.

Of course this scenario only works if the songs haven't already been finalized for the new CD.
