My most recent non-prog binge has been crazy sludge metal, and for some reason I just can't get enough!

Jesu
Sunn0)))
Boris
Swarm of the Lotus
Old Man Gloom

There's something about the sound of these bands that just really turns me on.  It might be the extreme power of the guitars or the fact that it's just a really different direction for metal, and it seems to me that sludge bands are capable of making some of the most artistic metal in recent times.

Anyone else enjoy this genre?

Is Swarm of the Lotus classified as sludge?

I have their cd and don't really see them that way.

well, for me they pretty much fit into sludge, even tho they may be on the borderline.  Anyway I have really been digging their album, but I guess they fit in more with stuff like Gaza, Botch, or Converge.

Don't know any of those bands except Sunn O))), who I really respect as true progressive musicians. I have a bootleged concert of theirs, and the notes written by the guy providing the source say that they were playing in a fairly dilapadated venue, and after about 30 minutes of their trademark 0.5 MPH riffing parts of the roof started to collapse! I think you can hear some of it over the intense distortion, along with some ironic crowd cheering.

I have to say I'm not very familiar with the bands you mentioned Chris, but as far as prog-metal goes, I find the "progressive sludge-metal" sub-genre to be very interesting.

Isis, Pelican, Callisto, Cult of Luna and to a lesser extent Minsk are all surprisingly entertaining. Clap

Get into Esoteric's last three albums, and also try Deathspell Omega, who play Black Metal but in a very nihilistic, avantish, prog-doomy way. Their Esotericish stuff is the Kenose EP and the split tracks, neat stuff!

I Second that.

@ Superprog:
I agree with your recommendation of those Neurosis albums. I think that Souls At Zero is their best (still) and one of my favourite albums. Do you prefer those you mentioned to it?

I like what I've heard from the genre although I don't know much from them. One of my recent discovery is Ufomammut. They are often concidered sludge metal as well as stoner rock, but good nonetheless. Snailking is very dark album to listen to. Yesterday I listened to Sun O))) 's sample at myspace.com and I like what I've heard also.

Sunn0))) is amazing! Quite a great band. I tend to like my sludge to be either southern or very spiritual (or both) Crowbar are the masters of southern sludge, a newer band called Artimus Pyledriver is quite good at the southern sounding sludge, and Im looking forward to a promising career from them. As as spiritual stuff goes I must mention OM featuring Sleep`s rythm section doing Dopesmoker style stuff with most songs lasting upwards of 11 minutes. Eastern religious topics lyrically.

Can't wait for their next full length.

Also lyrically they're totally in their own class when it comes to BM.

Do take the time to invest in Souls... After that I prefer Times of Grace which I think of as their 2nd best. But Souls has this raw feeling and energy emenating from it, simply superb songs.

I have also Eye Of Every Storm and A Sun That Never Sets, but I like those less (Sun... to me is a bit dissapointing, but I heard it is a popular album amongst Neurosis fans).

I have yet to hear Through Silver in Blood. Anyone heard it?
