A few hours ago I was walking down the street when suddenly I got a funny idea: What if Raging Bull was about a professional chess player? I know it's based on a true story, but I've thought about this for a while and I truly believe Scorsese could have portrayed all the same themes and the movie would be just as powerful if all the boxing scenes had been replaced with chess scenes and the movie had been named "Mating Bull." What do you think? This poll is dead serious, so choose wisely.

You could have Dustin Hoffman play Bobby Fisher in the movie. But would he gain 50 pounds like DeNiro did for RB? Tongue

I think he should most definitely gain weight. That would make the movie even more tragic and moving than the original, as an overweight chess player is a much more rare and thus a much sadder figure than an overweight boxer. To prove I'm right I did a bit of googling:

"overweight boxer" - 655 results
"overweight chess player" - 1 result Shocked

Definitely better! (I hate boxing.)

But the title might be a problem. Doesn't 'mating' mean... you know... 'parittelu' in Finnish? And with an animal following that word... Embarrassed

PS. I missed the option "much better" which I would have chosen naturally. But frankly, I haven't even seen Raging Bull in its entire, only cuts of it. But even one scene with outrageous boxing (sweat and blood flying) would be enough for me not to enjoy it.

PS 2. Peter Hammill's album title Fools Mate has amusingly two meanings, right?
Either dealing with chess or intercourse.

I thought the title with a double meaning might attract both chess fans and people who enjoy watching bulls mate (who would be terribly disappointed when they found out the movie is about chess).

Maybe the title could be "Mating. Dull." Or would that offend chess players?

I think the best choice would be to keep the title "Mating Bull" and add an explaining subtitle: "Mating Bull - The Rise and Fall of an Eventually Overweight Chess Player."

The scene of De Niro beating his brother would be a bit difficult. I mean, check mate instead of all that punching?...
