 Topic: Inspirations for a Teenager

Hey everyone  ,
In recent months I've begun to start listening to progressive rock. So far I've been listening to bands like Spock's Beard, Genesis, Yes etc. etc. etc. You get the picture.
Even more recently a bunch of friends and I thought of making a band, we're hoping to have a prog sound since we don't really like the pop rock out these days. I've been assigned the position as lead vocalist and keyboardist in the band. Any suggestions of bands with good keyboardists that I can listen to, and pick up from?

Welcome fantom!! There are many forum members with far greater knowledge of prog bands than i but you are on the right track with Yes(with Rick Wakeman). Try Emerson Lake and Palmer if you have not already done so,Actually intense keyboard work is a hallmark of prog so you will not have much trouble finding excellent source material, but there are many people here to give you great recommendations and advice!!!

Just search the threads here and you'll find a lot of recommendations. So many styles and influences. Enjoy. There are plenty of MP3's to check out.

I would begin with the artists already mentioned above.
Wakeman and Emerson are the two most famous (and most pompous..). You might also check their work in Strawbs and The Nice, respectively. Tony Banks in Genesis is also one to listen to.
Where to go from here? Anywhere, but there are many subgenres, you might not like all of it. However, since they play in some of my favourite bands and they ARE my favourite keyboarists (I play the organ myself) I would like to recommend Dave Sinclair (Caravan) and Dave Stewart (Hatfield & the North and National Health).

Kieth Emeson is by far the best keyboard player in the land.....check out ELP!!! but you will have to hammer the keys away to play as fast....if you can, listen to Hoe Down on 'Live on the King Biscuit Flower Hour'

Emerson and Banks would be my first choice. after that, I would probably suggest wakeman,or possibly Rick Wright from early floyd. I notice Rick Wright is an often overlooked keyboardist, and is definitely worth a listen.

Supertramp also has some nice keyboard sounds, well worth checking out.

For non prog you could go with Josef Zawinul. Easily.
Other than that, Wakeman and Emerson are good.
BTW, Fantom, where you at in Canada? Ontario? Just checking to see if there's people to jam with in my area. I'm always down with some fat music jams.

I prefer Kev' Moore, much better composer IMO. Anyway, I'd rather go with melodic keyboardists than technical ones, so think of Genesis, Pink Floyd...Oh and of course Neil Morse!

Fantom JSK, Check out Triumvirat's 'Illusions On A Double Dimple' and the amazing keyboards of Jürgen Fritz.
Maybe Triumvirat is more keyboard than you would like, but Fritz is a virtuoso (classically trained, too). IOADD would probably be one of my desert island discs, but even if you don't like it as much as I do, the keyboard work is very evident and would be worth listening to from your point of view. Given the bands that you mention, you would probably find it interesting.

My recommendation is Par Lindh.(Check out my Par Lindh Project thread elsewhere on the forum).Also Keith Emerson(ELP and The Nice) ,Dave Greenslade(Solo and Colosseum) ,Vincent Crane(Atomic Rooster) and German band Eloy are well worth checking out if you are looking for good reference points for keyboard based prog.

My faves are Derek Sherinian and Jordan Rudess. I don't like their work with Dream Theater (don't enjoy Dream Theater that much any more), but their work with Planet X and Liquid Tension Experiment, respectively, THAT'S something to love!!
Spock's Beard (and Transatlantic, Neal Morse plays and sings with them as well) always had tasteful keyboards, never too bombastic. On "Snow", they had brought in some Asian fellow who's rocking.
Of the classic prog bands, I enjoy the keyboard works in ELP and Gentle Giant the best, while Tony Banks in Genesis weren't too keen on letting his bandmates into the sound picture..especially guitarist Steve Hackett always had to stand back. I don't like that, there should be a good balance between the instruments..(hint, hint!)

Tom Galgano of IZZ would be of interest. He's got a great voice, plays some amzing things on keyboards and I believe, with their modern sound, could be very influencial on a young progger. Here's a link. Check ot their sound clips.

Trace (Rick Van Der Linden)
Finch
Shylock
Focus (avoid Mother Focus and Focus Con Proby altogether though)
National Health, Hatfield & The North (w/ Dave Stewart)
