Gorguts really should be added.  Technical/Avant-Garde Death Metal from Canada.

I can't believe nobody responded to this; I'll try again.

If bands like Behold... The Arctopus, Blotted Science and other Technical Metal bands warrant inclusion, Gorguts certainly does.  Some of the most complex, and supringly, interesting metal music I've ever heard.  It's blisteringly fast, but not in a DragonForce way.  Not for everyone, certainly, but they would fit nicely in the Technical Metal section.

I'm disappointed - neither of these players are avant-garde!

Just a little anecdote that maybe help Gorguts to be here.

Their lead singer, Luc Lemay and I went to the same music school here in Montreal around 1995-1996, where he studied viola. I didn't known anything about death-metal scene and to me, he was simply a student at the school but with longer hair than the others.

We begun to chat and began talking about music. He said to me that he was in a band who had a record deal and made tours in the US and all that. At the time, i was very into prog (as today) and I began to talk to him about prog. He didn't know a lot about it and decided to pass him some King Crimson records like "Red" and "Lark's tongue in Aspic".  He came to me the following day, saying that he liked them very much and saying that these records will surely influenced future compositions. In return, he passed me some Gorguts records, that i liked very much. I remember passing him some Swedish prog  like Anglagard and Anekdoten and he liked them too.  He is very open musically and liked all sort of music like classical and jazz too.

So, in retrospect, Gorguts was surely influenced by prog. Even the albums that he passed me was in fact very technical, skillful music that deserved to be here.

Later that year, he hosted a show at our school, "Cegep en Spectacle" where my band was performing and he like us very much.  He even help us in the aspect of stage presence, as he was already had experience for stage and us, very little. He is a good guy and had good memories about him. and our time at the school .He was always ready to help others.

The PMT considered Gorguts when we first formed and were rejected. But I'm willing to go back and think about it and listen to some of their stuff I have and maybe reconsider my vote.

Well, the obvious choice would be Obscura; it is one of the most complex albums I've ever heard, on a techincal death meta level, anyways.

I'm sympathetic to re-evaluating Gorguts ... I think that we could add them based on the strength of Obscura alone, but I need to listen to some of their other albums too to get a complete picture.

Obscura is really the only one that really shows any progressive influence. If you don't add based on that, you certainly won't go for other releases.

^ the problem is that Obscura, while certainly having some prog tendencies, is only very barely enough to include them IMO ...

Obscura is not the only prog release from Gorguts.  Check out From Wisdom to Hate's Inverted.
