"Down in the Sewer" would be their 'epic' imo

I was listening to Rattus Norvegicus a few days back. Great album. The Stranglers always had something considerably deeper than punk going on, but prog..?

Are they prog? Well Baldjean claims yes, from a 'compositional' point of view, which I see no one has disputed yet. It sounds like a reasonable claim.

For me, the jury's still out on this, perhaps Baldjean can expand on her claim with examples, and we can take it from there..?

I can kind of see where people are coming from with the Prog link here but so much of their material is outside the realms of Prog. nevertheless a great inovative band. But I speak from only really being familiar with the first 3 albums.

There is a live album called "The Stranglers and friends live in concert". Among the friends who sing and play on this record you'll find Peter Hammill, Robert Fripp and Steve Hillage.

I would say that The Stranglers should be included in the  "prog related" category.

I'm sure I mentioned the Stranglers & Friends album many years a go, more as one showing showing Fripp, Hillage and Hammill's punk creditials. Mrs Fripp aka Toyah Wilcox - punk vocalist, Hammill is one of Johnny Rotten Lyden's favourites....

I would like to see them here, if for nothing else, for the advanced keyboard technique. (Wakeman would never be able pull up something like the Strangler's keyboard section).

Are you sure? (I assume that "pull up" means something like "play"). Wakeman's not exactly a slouch on the keyboards. Does this mean we include all bands with a good keyboard player?

Yep, that post looks stupid  without an emoticon attached to it...LOLLOL

On a serious note, I really think Dave Greenfield was innovative keyboard player, his style was never heard in rock music before...of course, as a technician (and a composer), Wakeman could wrap him around the little finger anytime.

But Dave himself is a genius- because of his approach, his usage of relatively simple chords and extensive usage of pitch bend wheel/levers -- I simply can not explain it. Plus, IMHO, he was way better (or perhaps "more appropriate") in choosing timbres on his DCO synths of the era then Wakeman was on his Moog or Hammond.

Silly comparison, I know, just my two cents..

The album "The Raven" has numerous songs on it that take Genesis Prog to the next level. A good argument to vote them in.
