Topic: Portishead Posted: April 05 2008 at 12:24 |
I've just heard their first albums including the live in NY and I think it could be added in the prog related sub genre of the site, what do you think. It's a lot more prog than kate bush for exemple. I can develop if you want more explanations.

Is there someone who think that Portishead have their place in the related prog section? I've had the chance to hear their last release today and it's more obvious on this one

Can't see it myself, surely they're generally recognised as a trip-hop band?

very funny!! yes they are trip hop and not prog, just prog related, they use some prog elements and should be in this section for me. WHY ? _they are unique, they of course invented trip hop, but their music is very rich compared to massive attack or morscheeba. More rock obviously, but also psychedelic sometimes(mysterons). _they use a rich sound which reminds me the 70s and krautrock, or progressive rock, or proto prog(psychedelic music). _ instruments as flute or keyboards, played with an orchestra (the result was a success, quite homogenic) Seriously, it's especially noticeable on their new album before laughing, listen to what you can from the last album, and to mysterons(live), and roads(well I don't remember the best relevant songs, but these should be ok.

I'll reserve judgement until I've listened to the new album, which isn't officially released until 28th April.

LOVE Portishead, but are they prog? I think they probbably are not, atleast by this sites definition. I am not sure they even founded trip-hop per say.

I wasn't trying to be funny. I was suggesting that in order to add Portishead one should probably begin by adding better and more progressive trip-hop acts first, like the three abovementioned.

Bingo!!! if X is here...
As much as I love Portishead, I don't think they've got their place here...

let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword
