Hello fellow Rush freaks.
A few months ago I bought the DVD One Night In San Francisco by Rush tribute band Cygnus And The Sea Monsters. For some stupid reason I was not really impressed when I watched it for the first time but this evening I was blown away by this four piece formation, including drummer Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Transatlantic, Liquid Tension Experiment). Their renditions of the compositions 2112, Cygnus X-1, Hemispheres and YYZ (with an outstanding drum solo) are awesome, their sound is very close to the original Rush sound but for all musicians there is room for some improvisation, especially the intro of Cygnus X-1 is great but in fact all songs are "a Rush fan's wet dream", highly recommended!
DVD also contains an Audio Commentary with Mike Portnoy and Paul Gilbert.

Thanks to this Rush tribute DVD, last evening I have rediscovered the Rush album Hemispheres  !

I'm a massive Rush fan Erik but not usually drawn to covers albums/DVD's. However with the callibre of musicians on this one I may be very tempted to buy it. another one to add to my ever expanding wants list.

Well Paul, I share your ideas about cover bands but this formation is awesome, later I will write a review but I can tell you right now that the improvisation in the intro of Cygnus X-1 and the own ideas that the guitarplayer adds to the very distinctive Alex Lifeson sound are mindblowing  !

Surely you've already heard of this Mike? I've been eyeing it up for a while, I was watching Portnoy's cover bands on youtube the other day, very impressive. He's with Paul Gilbert in most if not all of them.
Cygnus and the Sea Monsters seems the most tempting though =D.

I've been in Majorca for two weeks Erik, returned on Monday.
I am not a big fan of this release. I don't "get" it - what is its purpose other than to make money for those involved?

OK Tony R30, with the family on Majorca  .... I hope you didn't meet too much fellow UK citizens, Dutchmen and Germans in such a popular holiday island   ...............  ! Perhaps it's quite subjective/personally but I love the way this Rush cover band (sounds better than 'tribute' band) presents a serie of excellent Rush compositions, very dynamic and they put some own ideas into the music, especially during the intro of Cygnus X-1 and I was blown away by the guitarplayer his sound, close to Alex Lifeson but with some subtle re-arrangements. But I understand your thoughts, I haven't had very much positive reactions, almost an understatement!

Yeah, I learned about it through Taibi's Portnoy DVD..Which I watched the whole thing . Yeah, I'm not really interested in Led Zep or The Beatles originially..why the hell would I like to see someone cover it?
Rush on the other hand..........

Agreed, Ive taken a look at the others. Theyre cool, but like I said before, this certainly is much more tempting. I've seen the youtube video of them doing YYZ with Mike performing a drum solo. VERY good cover.

Well to be fair, it was really only the stylistic difference in Labrie's voice. Instrumentally it was fantastic.
