Holdsworthian guitarists

I continue to be surprised by the number of guitarists who attempt
Allan Holdsworth's very distinctive guitar-playing style - that mix of
legato, fast runs and playing solos tangential to the main musical
theme/melody. Several of us  jazz rock fusion fans have come up
with a list of  contenders, who have adopted the style wholesale,
or have been known to play a few bars of solo this way :

Scott McGill (check out Finneus Gauge)

Francis Dunnery (self-confessed Holdsworth fan, who slips briefly into
Holdsworthian mode - listen to the Montreaux live set by It Bites)

Jacque LaGrec 

Alex MacHacek (as McHacek, the album "Featuring Ourselves" sounded to
be a small piece Zappa unit with Holdsworth on guitar - go find)

Jakko (64 Spoons, Level 42 and now 21st Century Schizoid Band)

Frank Gambale

Scott Henderson (there is a whole page on the Henderson/Holdsworth connection in "Jazz Rock: A History")

Greg Howe (at times)

Nguyen Le

etc. 

If you have come across Ynwgie Malmsteen's prog tribute album
"Inspirations", you'll find a good cover of UK's "In The Dead Night" -
Yngwie doesn't fall into the trap of doing a Holdsworth, (I'm glad to
report).

	Bill Pohl of Undeground Railroad ( www.theundergroundrailroad.net ) definitely does the Holdsy thing, especially live. David Torn kind of started off in that territory but quickly moved away from it and found his own sound. Edited by The Owl

	Sister site: Prog4you has an MP3 for a guy named Al Garcia that does Berlin and Holdsworth dead on. The songs called "Make it So." I haven't gotten around to buying the CD, cause I'd rather listen to Allan. I've got over thirty CD's of Allan Holdsworth, both solo and Side-man. Also check out "Primordial Sludge" from Birdsongs of the Mesozoic. Get psuedo-Holdsworth solo by Michael Bierylo. Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings) throws done the hat to Allan on many solos.

	Thanks for reminding me of Bill Pohl - have you heard his solo album from the early 90's "Solid Earth" ? Pohl tells me a new Underground Railroad album is being made and he is also doing solo work There is a great album by Canadian amateur guitarist Elliott Freedman( as the Elliott Freeman Group) came out c 1996, and clearly Holdsworth influenced. The guitarist with that great 16 piece band, Loose Tubes (the starting point for Earthworks Django Bates and many other British new jazzers), John Parracelli does a great Holdsworth-like solo on "Delightful Precipice". And most recently the guitarist with French metal prog fusionist band Alkemy on "Da 63 Projekt" (released by Unicorn Records this month) sounds Holdsworthian at time - even though (and oddly) the press release talks about Pat Metheny????
