Topic: Gary Numan at Progressive Ears Posted: January 13 2010 at 15:29 |
I saw with a great deal of interest that Prog Ears have Numan's CD The Pleasure Principle as their featured CD now. With quite a few fans and artists chiming in positively on the selction (along a few grumblers).
He has been influential, especially with his late 70's and early 80's productions, apparently in prog circles as well as industrial and metal ones.
It'll be interesting to see if more prog sites starts chiming in on him as an influential artist ;-)

interesting and a bold move, though ProgEars has always had a much bigger tent and seems to be moving toward a focus on popular innovation in rock rather than musical progression; I can see Numan's influence here and there, even in prog, and I remember when The Pleasure Principle came out and it certainly was new - what would be defined just a year or so later as as "New Wave" - though it was clearly the antithesis of what every Prog and Art rocker had been doing to that point. Ironic, really, and the possibility that later Genesis or Rush may have been mildly impacted by his music does not neccessarily put him in the family of progressive artists.
Sorry, just getting a jump on the debate

Hmmm - I saw Ultravox rejection mentioned in that other thread. Wonder if anyone in here are familiar with a side project of Midge Ure - a one off early project called "The Bloodied Sword"?
Would have been interesting to se how that one would have fared on an eval somewhere. That is, if samples can be found - to my knowledge that one has yet to see a CD release...

... yup, I've got that. There is a fair chance I haven't played that in 27 years.
...judging by the lyrics anyway:
"Propaganda machine, Vendor... of dreams, 'Tis I reject your worthless schemes. This proffered choice, Twixt death and hell, With death the prize, Will never sell! But, Couched within my cliched guile, With innuendo as a bride, A cause Can consummate Mankind, Seducing countless open minds."

I actually listened to I, Assassin a little today and was thinking, "this is a tad on the proggy side."
The bass playing (Pino Palladino) on that album is awesome.

Used to have that one myself. One of hundreds of vinyls that were sold when my first marriage broke up - when I was in dire need of money to be able to cover my daily costs ;-)
