Tough choice between Aguirre , Betty lu(37.2 Le Matin),, Wicker man and Underground.....
let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

Probably seen about three quarters of the movies on the list.

one of these three:

The Killing of a Chinese Bookie
- one of my preferred American movies, has all the rough edges and is able to tell a damn honesty story without all the Hollywood bullsh*t.
or
Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes The acting!
or
Stalker  In my mid to bottom half of Tarkovsky but still fairs better than most on the list.

Anyone want to convince me on Salò? I've read the book, thought about seeing the movie.

My main motivation for watching the movie was because it was banned in so many countries. Pier Paolo Pasolini made a film that nobody else would dare to, and probably died for his efforts (he was murdered just before it was released). As for the film itself, it's a fascinating study into the depths of human cruelty and perversion. It's not a porno, despite the overt sexual themes. Not for the faint of heart, but I'd highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys the darker side of Art (e.g. fans of the Slovenian/Italian band Devil Doll).

I saw it today while I was down at my local hire store, unfortunately it was on VHS. I'll have to see if  I can pick one up on the cheap (a player that is). That's interesting; I knew he died (murdered) around the time of this movies release, but was unsure what implications were involved. de Sade's book, 120 days of Sodom (which the movie is based on) is almost like a catalogue of perversions :P But as you mentioned with the movie, there is a far deeper 'study' of human cruelty at play. It took me a long time to realise this in regards to de Sade's works (I've read most of them), but it hit home in the end. He purposely intends to shock people, but once the shock valve wears off there are far more rich sub-themes shining through; even if he was a bit of a hack writer from a technical perspective.

I've never seen any of them... Oh no! I feel like... a... popular culture following sheep-like non-art lover! I hope these movies suck.
Music is some kind of art.
