A really hard decision, but I have to go with Permanent Waves based off of Natural Science giving it a slight edge over the second half of MP. Both are fantastic albums and both have some of my favorite Rush songs, so really they're pretty much equal.

It's hard to say that Natural Science is better than the second half of Moving Pictures for me.
I really dig Vital Signs and Witch Hunt is such a great and unique song for them.

That Moving Pictures is widely considered Rush's best album may be the simple most puzzling "best album consensus" I have ever come across. To my ears at least, they have produced several albums which are *obviously* better. MP has its moments, but it also has dead air like Red Barchetta which does nothing for me at all. Permanent Waves on the other hand, is an extremely strong album. I especially like the oft overlooked Entre Nous. |
I love Red Barchetta. I think I like every song on both albums.

Pretty much...I should say it is tough to call one flat out over the other.

Permanent Waves for sure, just musically deeper, more complex and more interesting album. Natural Science and Jacob's Ladder can easily beat all tracks from MP.

In my opinion Moving Pictures is just an average Rush album.
Don't get me wrong, I love the average Rush album. I love Rush overall.
But Permanent Waves would maybe be in my top 5.

Really hard choice. Both albums have songs that I've heard so many times that I almost never need to hear them again (Tom Sawyer, Spirit, Limelight)
Both albums also have some of my all time favorite Rush songs (Freewill, Jacob's Ladder, Natural Science, Red Barchetta, YYZ, Camera Eye)
It's a push for me

They're both practically perfect. Permanent Waves by a slight advantage.

If you asked me years ago, I'd say Moving Pictures. Now Permanent Waves has become one of my favorite Rush albums, with a slight edge over MP.

'Pictures for at least having The Camera Eye. 'Waves always came off as a little too quirky for me.

Two excellent albums
Moving Pictures just wins for me (though Natural Science is my fav track off either album).
2112 - Moving pictures was a great period for the band.

Permanent Waves for me. The Camera Eye whilst good wasn't good enough to take up so much space on the Moving Pictures album. Lacks the inventiveness of some of their other longer pieces for me.

Moving Pictures is the third topic in a row (for me). Must be a hype or over rating or something. ;) T'riffic. Voted for Permanent Waves as it is 100% perfect.

In the comparison of tracks here I go: 1)The Spirit of the Radio > Tom Sawyer 2)Freewill > Red Barchetta 3)Jacob's Ladder > YYZ (by a small margin) 4)Entre Nous < Limelight 5)Different Strings < The Camera Eye 6)Natural Science >> Witch Hunt + Vital Signs. That's it, a clear winner for me is PeW.

Honestly, these two albums are not Rush's best works. I avtually wonder why everybody says Moving Pictures is their best album. The songs are... Good. Tom Sawyer is a good song, along with vital signs and camera eye, but they are nothing compared to songs like Xanadu or the Cyngus series or villa strangiato or Lakeside Park.
Maybe I'll say MP, but that's because of Vital Signs, which is pretty good.

I used to have a really good signature but I forgot it...

Vital Signs is my the least favorite track on MP, because I think it musically doesn't fit good on that album with that Police-influenced reggae/dub vibe. Anyway, I prefer the majority of The Police songs over Vital Signs any day.
