One of the greatest musicians to surge in Argentina and Latin America as a whole, has recently passed away due to a short struggle with lung cancer.
He'll truly be missed, a genius who went through various rock genres and succeeded at them: blues, hard rock, jazz fusion, prog, great, great artist.

"Bien aqui o en el mas alla, sos alma de diamante; y aunque este mismo sol se nuble después sos alma de diamante" - "Whether here or far beyond, you are Diamond Soul; and altough the sun itself gets dimmed, you are Diamond Soul"

Thank you for so much wonderful music, RIP Flaco, may your art live forever!

Luis Alberto Spinetta, one of the biggest icons of the Argentinean rock, died today from a long struggle he has been having with a lung cancer since July of 2011.

He was the main musician from famous bands sucha as: "Almendra", "Pescado Rabioso", "Invisible", etc... He made public his struggle with his sickness the 23rd of December (2011) in the middle of confusing rumours that kept rising about it. He made it through an emotive letter delivered through one of his sons' (Dante Spinetta) Twitter account.
I'll post the letter in Spanish in its entirety so that there are no details lost in the translation. I'm sorry if this bothers somebody.
"Desde el mes de julio sé que tengo cáncer de pulmón. Estoy muy cuidado por una familia amorosa, por los amigos del alma, y por los mejores médicos que tenemos en el país. Ante el aluvión de información inexacta, quiero aclarar públicamente las condiciones de mi estado de salud. Me encuentro muy bien, en pleno tratamiento hacia una curación definitiva", escribió el "Flaco".

Last month, the musician underwent surgery for a perforated bowel, unrelated to the lung cancer and was hospitalized 25 days, in which he spent his 62° birthday.
Since then, he has received support from the artistic scene, where he managed to install himself as a musical reference. His colleagues and the public in genrealtoday weep silently or through social networks, in fact, his four children (Dante, Catarina, Valentino y Vera) expressed themselves on Twitter with very emotional messages.

Icon of the "Rock Nacional", he formed bands from "Almendra" in 1967, which were followed by "Pescado Rabioso", "Invisible", "Spinetta Jade" until he decided to pursue a solo career in the mid 80's. In 2007, Artaud, the third album that launched  "Pescado Rabioso", was voted Best Album of "Rock Nacional" by the local Rolling Stone.
In December 2009, recalled all those steps with a single, now legendary show at Estadio Velez Sarsfield. From that moment, their performances were more sporadic but continued to lead the grid of the main local festivals.

Thanks for reading.
El Flaco's music will live forever in his music.

Thank you for the music - now you'll meet Mr. Rapoport again, who went to Heaven by the end of 2011.

Very very sad, he was only 62 Cry. Flaco Spinetta was a true genius and was one of those very few able to play progressive and experimental music while touching a somewhat diverse audience. He was also known to be a humble and very kind person. A wonderful and extremely creative musician, songwriter, lyricist and poet that touches millions of souls across Latin America...

Vuela flaquito querido!!!Clap

Spinetta was one heck of an artist and I am glad I was lucky enough to see him in La Trastienda during the "Pan" shows. Luis is not about prog , is beyond prog... succeded in every musical genre , call it rock , jazz , pop , fusion , folk etc. I strongly advise the non spanish speakers of this site to check his not prog albums because records like : Kamikaze , Pan , Un Mañana , Los Socios del Desierto , ALMENDRA (The cornerstone of Spanish Spoken rock) cant be missed.
Sadly enough he does not have enough credit as he deserves in argentina since most argentineans like their music much more simple than Luis's.

^agreed, or he's sometimes overshadowed by Garcia's and Paez' more poppy and accessible material, although these are great musicians as well.

Today I listened to Invisible, Spinetta Jade and his solo records, A 18' del Sol and Kamikaze. Brilliant stuff.
