In my opinion the song is very reminiscent to the Fly By Night album. I also don't understand how Peart would proclaim this album to having this best drumming, or even near it. This is just simple rock drumming. Even some of guitar parts are fairly weak. Atleast Geddy knows how to keep his pride for bass playing.
As an extreme Rush fan, i'm disappointed by this song. But this is my first listen so.

Because I am a fanboy, I love the track and will listen to it over and over again.
But from a more unbiased standpoint, here are some thoughts:
The bass is awesome. I hear echoes of Hemispheres in Geddy's bassline.
The vocals are stellar, as usual. At the same time, I think they're missing the emotional quality that Geddy's vocals have always had, but that I think he lost a little bit on S&A.
I often enjoy repetition in music, but it sounds like they repeated the verse and chorus three or four times and the bridge three times just so they could say they wrote a long song. It could easily have been trimmed down a minute and a half or so.
The instrumental section was kind of disappointing, as it pretty much just repeated the riffs from the verse and chorus. The solo was blazing and interesting but lacked emotion.
It's not prog, by any stretch of the imagination. Overall, I think it has more of an alt-rock sound; whereas VT and S&A mixed this sound with progressive tendencies, this song is basically full-fledged alternative rock. I hear a major Foo Fighters influence.
I think I'm going to enjoy the album very much, but from an objective standpoint I have to say that it doesn't look like it's going to be one of their better ones. Of course, anything Rush puts out is a thousand times better than most rock music out there, so I'm not complaining.

The Foo Fighters .....Ummm no, what you are hearing is a fall back to their Fly By Night - Hemisphere years of straight up metal/rock jamming, guitar, bass, drums.
Remember that Rush made mention this song was a straight up fast hard rock/metalish song.
I think you have to reserve judgement for the song since it is part of the concept. The song may not have prog qualities, which who cares, prog is dead anyway .......But the album as a whole is very progressive based on what they are doing with it and the storyline.

I definitely heard a good deal of Foo Fighters influence on that song. The beginning of the instrumental section, especially, reminded me of Bridge Burning (which reminded me of VT). I think we're seeing kind of a back and forth effect: Rush influences FF, who influence Rush, who influences FF...etc.

Have you heard the WHOLE album yet? This is just ONE song. Btw, I think the drumming on this song is far from simple. I'd like to see you play the drums on this song.
You're being silly if you think this, or any of the other singles, express amazing drumming compared to his prime or even the late 80s-earl 90s albums. I don't know, it doesn't seem very inspired at all.

I thought the drumming was good, and I wouldn't call it uninspired, but I wouldn't say it stands out at all compared to what he's done in the past. It's fast, but speed has never been the best thing about Peart's playing.

Just heard it and it appeals to me. Way better than anything on snakes and arrows - great Lifeson lead break, Melodic and heavy. Lee sounds great on vocals, very multi tracked though. A must have album by sounds of the 3 songs available! I like that film clip too.
When was Neil's concept introduced, and how did it affect what everybody was doing?

Two weeks or so into it, as Geddy and Alex were writing more music, we all kind of looked at one another and said, 'Hey, this is really turning into something. It's tying together.' Then one day, Neil walked in the room and said, 'It's done. I finished it.'
"For the next 20 minutes, Neil talked about this vision he had for the concept of the record, and it was one of those moments I'll never forget. Listening to him, watching him speak – it was amazing! I wish we were filming him so we could put it on YouTube. And right there, the whole record just clicked. Once Geddy and Al heard where Neil was going, they churned out some amazing music. I think Headlong Flight came the next day."
