Bambir at KnockanStockan Festival, Ireland 2012

Founded by Jag Barseghyan in the 1970s in Gyumri, Armenia, Bambir was lauded as one of the best rock groups in the Soviet Union, performing original material, traditional Armenian songs, and modern arrangements of Komitas and medieval Armenian music. Today, Jag Barseghyan records solo albums, ensemble albums, and performs with original members of The Bambir and other international musicians. In 1982 Bambir won the Folk Music Award at the International Festival in Lida, Belarus. They celebrated their 20th anniversary in Moscow in 1998 and in Gyumri at their first Biennial. On their 30th anniversary, they released Armenian Scotch, an album dedicated to the 140th anniversary of Hovhannes Tumanyan and the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns. Jag’s son, Narek, Arman Kocharyan, Arik Grigoryan, and Vardan Paremuzyan have formed a separate but connected four-piece rock band, The Bambir. While they started playing together in Armenia, they've earned a reputation in Russia, France, the United States, Turkey, and beyond. They have been based in Ireland as of January 2012. They write and perform their own music written by Narek and Arik, and are known for their vibrant stage presence in their live shows and unique sound.  http://thebambir.com/our-story/

released 08 January 2014

personnel:

Narek Barseghyan (guitar, vocals)
Arik Grigoryan (flute, percussion, vocals)
Arman Kocharyan (bass, vocals)
Ashot Korganyan (drums]

INFLUENCES- There will be inevitable comparisons: Jethro Tull, because they have a flute. Led Zeppelin because they lose themselves in the music and pound their instruments until they roar. The Beatles because, well, there are four of them, and it’s not always easy to tell them apart. The longer they stay together, the more they engulf each other. In rehearsals, everyone faces each other with few words exchanged. Start off in gibberish and move on to words. Turn on the distortion if you need to. Sit on the floor so you feel the vibrations. Take off your shoes so you can feel your bass. Play together until it becomes second nature. Riff until you find the madness. They play in a trance, whirling and tumbling like dervishes, rocking and swaying like boys at rapturous lesson.

Their live shows are manic and yet grounded. Improvised and yet perfectly calculated. Hearts pump and feet stomp, with rebel yells and pounding drums and soaring flutes. You are aware that you are witness to something mysterious, something rare, something that seems absurd to try and put into words. -  http://www.reverbnation.com/thebambir

Another missed proposal for Prog Folk - this one being three weeks old now. Seems well worth checking out to me. Plenty of web presence for these guys, who certainly seem to have a fairly original 'take' on folk music viewed from a wider perspective. Plus the fact that they are already on proggnosis: http://www.proggnosis.com/ARTIST_DETAIL.aspx?AID=10604Embarrassed

Sorry again, travels and life getting in the way. Svetonio emailed me about these guys a few weeks ago and I told him they sounded really familiar. Turns out we approved them from a prior recommendation back in January and they just need to get added. Like I said in the Gallery thread, I have four additions to work on and this is one of them.
