Spent 6 hours talking and listening to Magic Band's guitarist and leader , Gary Lucas last night in the Georgian town of Stamford in the English country of Lincolnshire - when he also did  his usual incredible one man guitar set. Spent a lot of time drumming up business for the Magic Band's tour of the UK at the beginning of July.  So please check them out in the Netherlands!!!

I was a little disappointed... without the Captain himself, there was less Magic , but still, I can't deny they are fantastic musicians! It was a good concert, but a bit too 'normal' for my taste. They played a few pretty straight-forward blues songs (I guess from Safe As Milk, I don't have that one). The songs from Trout Mask were great! Hair Pie live!!! Odd time changes! Perfect! But I didn't like the vocals of 'Drumbo' French. But what a great drummer he is! And Rockette Morton was also very good! And Mantis did a fantastic guitar-solo!

Overall: Good show, I don't regret having bought the tickets, but the music was not as fantastic as on the records (I guess mainly because Van Vliet himself was not present).

Joren

I don't think Don Van Vliet is a well man from my conversations with Gary Lucas. Lucas claims to have made the final push that propelled DVV into full time painting in the Mojave desert, because he was increasingly unhappy about being on the road. From what I can gather, DVV has quite some say in what this band does. They travelled to California to put the set together under the watchful eye of the Captain, to his full approval.

Hopefully I'll being talking to Lucas next Tuesday, when the Magic Band  hits Nottingham, and ask him about Don's involvement nowadays.

BTW I suggest checking out the liner notes on Lucas's album of outtakes Improve the Shining Hour – rare lumière 1980-2000, which includes two live tracks from the last line-up of Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band, for clues to the way Beefheart composed and passed his music to the band. BTW have you come across Mersey Trout - a jumbled mess of recordings made of Beefheart etal on the last  tour?
