Topic: Jazz Poll Vol. I - 1959-60!!!! Posted: June 11 2014 at 14:00
Sixties jazz is really the best music ever so I thought I'd try to do series of my favorite jazz albums year by year.
Edit: As I don't expect this project to become a huge hit I'll take two years at a time... and 1959 seems like a more natural place to start. It sort of marks the beginning of what we think of as "modern jazz" and the golden era that follows. I couldn't not include Kind of Blue but if you want to make me happy, just vote for any other title.
I don't expect many of you to have heard more than a handful of these, but I hope you might want to check some of the unfamiliar ones out.
My own top five goes something like this:
1. Eric Dolphy - Out There & also 1. Cecil Taylor - Looking Ahead!
& another 1. Ahmed Abdul-Malik - East Meets West (but I might as well have gone for "Jazz Sahara")
Of the ones I own and adore, it was between Taylor's Shape of Jazz to Come and Mingus' Ah Um. I went with the latter seeing as I've just been on a huge Mingus binge (well not exactly - the binge consisted of Mingus and a lot of Pharoah Sanders albums).
Nice poll though Saper
Soooo many breathtaking albums in this poll it literally boggles the mind.
Oh and btw: You should probably have left out Miles' two albums. My bet is that Kind of Blue will run with this like a cheetah on ritalin.

Thank you thank you

I guess so but, butI I don't want to make a poll where "other" gets most of the votes either. And they have a natural place here. Just like A Love Supreme will have 1965-66.
Oh yeah that's right - you went for an 'other' option
Probably smart to include them then. I figure most folks on here will know Miles' work. Especially seeing as he's got Kind of Blue on the top 100 list of prog albums

I like this poll and look forward to the next ones. I have the Mingus album and it was a close call with that, but I have to go with Dave Brubeck and Time Out.
I am curious about Ahmad Jamal's album listed on the poll. I have his 1989 (I think) album "Pittsburgh" and love it.

I like that Jamal-album alot myself but I wouldn't reccomend it as a starting point getting to know his older works, as its a one of project with his regular trio and a 15 piece string section. Among his earliest his1958 release: At the Pershing: But Not for Me is stunning. 1965's Extensions is my favorite of his from the 60's though. A masterpiece but a difficult one to track down.

Some excellent choices. I fear I love Sun Ra too much to not vote for him here.
Dig me...But don't...Bury me I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect.

^Jazz in Silhouette is supernice. Of course some of Sun Ra's masterworks will appear in the next couple of polls.
BTW: have you heard his slightly overlooked 1962-album Secrets of the Sun (released in 1965)? In 2008 this already perfect album was topped with a sensational bonus: A n unreleased 17 minute epic called Flight To Mars which has become my favorite track of his.

It is...though admitted it probably wouldn't be in my top ten of his albums.
And I have! I didn't know it was recorded that early though. Damn impressive. Flight To Mars is stellar indeed...definitely the standout on the record to me...though it's all quite good (and thoroughly Sun Ra of course).

Can someone tell me if this attempt to post some vids actually can be seen by anyone? I can't. Is it a problem with chrome, maybe? If you can see them. Check them out!

I couldn't before quoting and editing. Just put the codes between TUBE and /TUBE in brackets will help.
: I have only heard Miles Davis and Dave Brubeck. Both are about equally good. I cannot remember if my own first screams were jazzy, but even if they were, there are no recordings. So I vote for Dave Brubeck.

I did. I logged in on my Ipad to check on Safari and everything looked like its supposed to.
I used Chrome and I couldn't see them. When I changed the full URL between the tags to the code only ("\[TUBE\]z-n6KzsFwx8\[/TUBE\]" for the first one, but without beckslashes - these I added here to keep this post more or less readable), the vids became visible. They were not visible in Internet Explorer either.
