I hate voting on this one. My preference is rock music, but I also enjoy jazz just as much. But I have not, in all honesty, heard Soft Machine as much or as well as I should or could. In fact, I don't think I have heard anything past SM5 or 6. And I have heard Caravan's a lot more having over 15 of their albums.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Caravan is one of those groups I tried hard to like but they never clicked with me.

Soft Machine's fusion era doesn't really do it for me, I prefer both their 60's albums making psychedelic music.

Caravan wins this for me.
