Just wondering which you prefer. Both are respectively the band's most experimental album (in my opinion), and they're very closely rated. For me, LTIA is a masterpiece, but Pawn Hearts is just on another level.

Thanks for any feedback Smile

A close call. Both albums are good, but somewhat overrated. Imho these belong somewhere in the middle of the 3.5-4 star range.

I give my vote to Pawn Hearts because this album has one outstanding track: Man-erg.

Tough call indeed, but I'll have to give it to Crimson.
Both are very unique sounding albums though. Barking mad in each their own way....but always interesting and, in some instances, pioneering a certain frivolous and disjointed soul of rock music.

Neither, so no vote.

Two of my least favourite prog bands, I'm afraid.

I love Lemmings and Man ERG from Pawn Hearts but never really got into Plague.

Larks Tongues..

Lark's Tongues was a masterpiece of intent more than realization: I never felt the actual recorded album did justice to the radical departure of the music itself, as heard in Crimson's live performances from the era.

Pawn Hearts seems to me even now a more uncompromising musical statement: Hammill and company didn't pull their punches in the studio the way Fripp and Crimson did.

On stage I would go with the Crimson King every time, all the time. But when comparing the albums I'll usually reach for Pawn Hearts...at least today. Ask me again tomorrow and the answer might be different...

In my opinion, all prog collections, need to contain these two classic albums by these two classic prog groups. For me, a tough call. VDGG is definitely idiosyncratic in their musically approach and Pawn Hearts is to my ears their defining contribution. LTIA on the other hand is easily one of my favorite albums. It completely redefined KC and, again in my opinion, what could be done in the context of rock music. My call, LTIA.

i have never heard of pawn hears outside of A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers (and man what a good epic), but i have heard more into Larks' for a couple of months now even though pretty much the whole album is brought down on Youtube (f**kin' bullsh*t!!) so my vote goes to Crimson.

Camel first, with IQ and Genesis joint second. I also like Mostly Autumn, Strawbs, Riverside, Wishbone Ash, Gentle Giant, Pendragon, Marillion, Tull, Floyd, Yes, Gryphon, Horslips, Manfred Mann's Earthband, BJH, Rush, Focus, Iona and many other bands.

But I never have "got" VDGG or KC.

What makes hard for me to pick is that Fripp is on both albums. Collectively some of his greatest work, IMHO.

I like all of those bands you listed and they are all more melodic straight ahead prog bands...except for GG.
KC and VDGG can have some difficult passages in their material and can be abrasive at times.

They lack an on-going melody that flies and soars on a keyboard - that would be my guess for why he dislikes them.

/gun against your head.

So, now what? Wink

Pawn Hearts sounds unearthly, represents Hammill well—mad, dark, brilliant. While Larks is great, upon repeated listens I can't stand it. I haven't heard it for 4-or-so months, but no desire yet!!

VDGG were a more 'mental band' so I quite like them for it. KC were almost oppressive in their self conscious experimental way. WIth VDGG it just 'happens' and it is what it is. I vote VDGG!

but if Red was the choice I would vote for thatWink

Well, the list says Pawn Hearts, although I should probably re-evaluate that.

Pawn Hearts by far. I have never quite understood the attraction to Larks Tongues in Aspic.

I am currently digging:

Hawkwind, Rare Bird, Gong, Tangerine Dream, Khan, Iron Butterfly, and all things canterbury and hard-psych. I also love jazz!

Please drop me a message with album suggestions.

I'd say you're not really qualified to vote.

Mine goes to Pawn Hearts but its two of my lasting favorite progbands up against each other. I'm one of the very few that prefer both Red and Starless and Bible Black over Larks Tounges from their 73-74-era.

I have a lot of time for Pawn Hearts, and "Lemmings" is one of the best album openers in prog (or in rock, for that matter). However, Larks' Tongues in Aspic is, in my view, a much more cohesive album - not to mention a much more influential one. The only thing that prevents it from achieving perfection are Wetton's still rather shaky vocals. On Starless and Bible Black he had already grown into a much better singer.

Right! When I think of Wetton's three studio album stint with Crimso', I think of "shaky" vocals. Brilliant observation, Schmedrick!
