Well both are not equal....You could have put "I Like Both", I would have checked that box. But Neil Peart is The Professor, nuf said.Gavin will always be my #2 drummer, unless he continues this hiatus with PT as not much has been released by him. On tour with King Crimson, with 2 other drummers, meh does not do much for me. I want to see Gavin behind the kit playing with PT, OSI or even SW's band, although Marco is excellent there. Too much hiatus is not always a good thing. -------------

Even though I rarely listen to Rush, I gotta pick Neil as the better drummer. He's not even my all time favorite drummer, but I don't think there's anyone who does it better. He set the standard that thousands since have tried to live up to. ------------- I am the funkiest man on the planet! |

Harrison has very specific approach to drum-kit and his education and style is different, hard to compare. He is a drummer of this century, incredibly talented and hardworking, in some ways his style is more proficient and demanding than Peart's. Peart is on the other hand an incredibly complex person - not just a top-class drummer, but also a lyricist, philosopher, writer... When you get to their level, it's not who's better than who. It's a matter of who's style you prefer... ...but both their styles are kinda similar! Great imaginations and precision linear approach. Both are more introverted, "head's-down" and focused on their playing. Neither showcase "performance flash" like some drummers (Minnemann, Lang) Comparing their style to jazz fusion drummers like Weckl, Sipe, or Vinnie there's a fluidity that's missing. Not a bad thing, just a different approach. Both Harrison and Peart played for and arrange their parts perfectly for the music they perform. They just come from different time periods. Harrison may be more "technically gifted" (especially in the jazz arena, which surprised me until I found out about his dad), but Neil was really creative. Both have drum solos on David Letterman if you want a visual side by side comparison. Harrison's solo was fantastic on that show! I can't decide. My favorite is still this guy, though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rqdha2x18l4 ...and Vinnie of course. Who's played on a larger discography than Vinnie? (Maybe Hal Blaine?) |

Hi,
Considering that Gavin has played with KC, which is farrrrrrrr more difficult music than Neil's band ... I would say that Gavin is way more important a percussionist.
I think that too many people are attached to Neil's band and their massive following to be able to even appreciate, or listen, to anything that Gavin has done! ------------- Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about!
