From the space rock conference we have a band that needs no introduction one nearly left out of the contest for having the greatness to have transcended the label and be seen as far more than a simple prog band.

From England.

PINK FLOYD!!

From the crossdressing conference we have one of the most creative and famous artists of the prog rock movement.

From England

MIKE OLDFIELD!!!!

for IanHeart

Vegas oddmakers have Floyd as a prohibitive 30 vote favorite but can Oldfield pull the upset.. ahhh.. no but can he keep it close. We shall see!!

I wouldn't remove one from the turntable to put the other on, but The Piper is enough to make e vote the Floyds. Two of my faves, anyway.

PF have always been one of my favourite bands, at least when Waters was with them. Oldfield, on the other hand, has always left me rather cold. So, no contest here.

This is brutal, these are literally two of the primary artists that got me into this stuff in my teens.

Floyd were my favorite band for 2 decades, they could literally do no wrong until the dreadful The Final Cut and the collapse of the band dynamic.

Oldfield has produced three of my favorite albums in Tubular Bells, Ommadawn & Hergest Ridge. There's also a smattering of great releases across the discography (as well as a fair share of dogs).

Given he's going to probably going to get pummeled anyway I'll throw some love to Oldfield.

I find Oldfield boring, like a guy whose brother-in-law owned a studio and Mike didn't get charged hourly rates for dicking around with the 16 track.

Floyd all the way.

I really like Mike Oldfield, especially his middle years (QE2, Discovery, Five Miles Out, Crises), but Pink Floyd are too awesome from Meddle to Animals to vote against.

Pink Floyd especially for the Geesin collaboration, the Atom Heart Mother suite.

I like all the Floyd albums up to and including The Wall, though I play the ones up to Meddle the most.

Like Oldfield too, and should explore his discography more (only heard a few of his albums, and none for years, so voting would not be that fair, I feel).

Oh, this is difficult. Pink Floyd was my first favourite band... and to this day I guess it remains so. However, I then found Yes... and Rick Wakeman... and Dream Theater... and those bands have become very close to my top... and then came Mike Oldfield, and indeed he has joined those of my very favourite artists. He released music so beautiful in the 70's... and then some more on later albums, that I can get about the same enjoyment from him as from the very Pink Floyd.

Two giants, but one is more the mightier and it will take this poll hands down.  We all know who that will be.  I myself am voting for the other one simply because I am more moved by his music.  We all know who that is.

To put it politely: out of 25-30 studio albums that Oldfield churned out I could make a 90-minute long, 3.5-star compilation that I would occasionally enjoy listening to.

To put it rudely: IMO, Mike Oldfield made 10 times more albums than he should have :)

Off the top of my head PF have made at least 7 albums that I rate 4 stars or better.

Floyd, easy choice.

The best Oldfield stuff I've heard is the first three albums, which are excellent especially Ommadawn.

I was going to write that Mike Oldfield leaves me cold too, but its not true. His contribution to Little Red Robin Hood Hit the Road (on Robert Wyatts Rock Bottom) certainly doesn't. More often it leaves me in tears. I also really like Mike's distinct sound/playing but for some reason I seem unable to enjoy listening to his albums.

How easy is that...to vote for a band that introduced me and countless other to the world of prog...every single album is worth gold up until "The Wall".
As for Mike Oldfield...
"Tubular Bells" & "Ommadawn" are beautiful.."Hergest Ridge" & "Amorak" are very gud too...
But that aint enough against the mighty "Floyd".

indeed.  Clap which is why we did the Portland bracket alteration.

Everyone knows the Portland bracket will go down to Floyd and G.G.  It made no sense for a 'fun' tournament to have Camel go out against Floyd and ELP out against G.G as they were originally drawn for 2nd round matchups. So we tweeked it. Left G.G opposite Floyd and made Floyd the de facto one seed and moved Camel against ELP in the 2nd round. A bit of fun and glory to the winner before the winner of that goes out in the 3rd round against G.G.  ELP would have no chance and doubt even Camel will knock off G.G. Though with Camel nothing short of knocking off anyone outside of the (Yes, Genesis, K.C.,Floyd) power group would surprise me. Those bobbleheads are quite something LOL

hard choices .. but part of what I like about many of these early rounds are we are getting those hard choices from the get go with a few exceptions.

Besides even when we get down to the final 4 or even final 8. We all respect the biggies... but we are still have our favorites.  We do identify ourselves as 'Genesis Fan' 'Yes Fan' 'K.C. fan' doesn't mean we don't like the others (for the most part LOL) but most know who they are going to vote for when it comes down to the heavies.

This tournament will likely be just the big dance. The real fun is the early rounds, looking for the Cinderellas and possible upsets but as in all tournament.. the cream will rise above the chaos and we will likely have heavies winning all 4 regions and facing off against each other. Just like the big dance.

I like seeing the differences in the musicians here, and the non playing fans ..

very different approaches to the music.

I can eat a good meal and not care less how it got that tasty - but a chef will sit down to that meal and crap all over it for various reasons.

that's my approach to music - I have no musical talent so I can really only appreciate the end product - clueless as to how it got that way.

I'm completely unable to intellectualize music and i'm in awe of the knowledge on this forum ..

Clap  I can really dig what you are saying. My wife and myself are perfect examples.  My wife has zero knowledge of music theory and never once picked up an instrument while I've played for many years and have a solid knowledge base of music theory.

Yet who really is the better reviewer, a much better person to discuss music with, much more able to get at the heart of a band, an album, a particular musical nuance?

My wife.  To me, and I do agree completely with you, it is ONLY the end product that counts and all that matters. It may be prog but it still just music.

Music is meant to be felt, to be experienced..to touch and stimulate not to be dissected and studied like a cadaver.

Cheers Walton and welcome to the forum. The key to a forum are the people and yes, this forum has some of the neatest, friendliest and smartest people you'd ever meet.  We have met many live and in person and have found all to be even more so in real life LOL
