What God decreed this matchup.. however the God of D&D dice called for it so we must deliver

From the S/R-Psych Conference. .one of the THE defining bands of the entire sub-genre. The band against which all spacey, psychedelic prog bands are measured. As well as owner of the greatest live prog album ever made.

From England

HAWKWIND!!

From the Zeuhl Conference we have a band who didn't just define a sub-genre they created one and are one of a handful of THE most unique bands not just in prog.. but all of music.

From France

MAGMA!!!

Vegas oddsmakers have this listed as a tossup.

I'm going to go have a think about this one, loved Hawkwind for a long long time with several all time classic album. Magma are a much more recent discovery for me and I like a lot of there stuff a lot. I'll be back later.

Space Ritual vs MDK
Quark, Strangeness & Charm vs KA
Levitation vs ER
Warrior On The Edge Of Time vs Kohntarkosz

Tough call

Despite being traumatised by Hawkwind (or rather their naked dancer) when I was 19, I prefer them to Magma, a band I just don't "get" at all.

Though I do like some of Hawkwind's music (especially the albums they released when Simon House was on board), they never grabbed me the way Magma did. Vander's merry crew all the way!

Hawkwind leaves me cold

Magma is brutal and pure genius, the encounter point between Karl Orff, Wagner and Vander.

Jeez... tough call.

Classics like Space Ritual, Levitation and Hall of the Mountain Grill are highlights in a very varied discography. Stacia certainly made them a unique live show and they are often cited as a highly influential band.

I just can't deny how incredible a band Magma is though. They came out of left field playing their own brand of mutant jazz and continue to do so 30 years on without compromise (spare the incredibly strange "Merci" that I can't help but have a soft spot for)

Magma it is.

I enjoyed both bands live in the early seventies. Hawkwind made some classic albums then but failed to maintain my interest in the ensuing decades. My vote has to go to one of the two all-time great innovative bands that still inspire to this day - MAGMA.

Doing a head to head here. Raff putting on Kobaia album for me, then going with Space Ritual after that as we have the Sunday tradition of always playing a Hawkwind album as we get geared up for the week ahead.

Not that it will me decide, I suppose I won't decide until next Sunday

I never got into Hawkwind, so this was easy seeing as Magma is the bee's knees.
A little strange that I don't like Hawkwind though. Judging by their sound and aesthetics they should be right up my alley...but they're not. I still listen to Warriors once or twice a year to see if I've changed my mind.

I think some are voting based on the choices you gave. That early Magma pick isn't going to win
any votes. You should have put one of their better songs. Your pick has to be in their bottom
5%. I think once one gets into the fun side of Magma, like some of Attahk and Merci, it's makes
it easier to understand the band. They aren't all about seriousness. You can see that with the
gospel-influenced stuff they do.

I love Stoah and it perfectly represents the fun side of Magma while Merci represents Christian Vander at his all time creative low (which isn't that low btw). None of them are good as starting points, though. If I was to introduce Magma through one composition and not an album I'd go for Rïah Sahïltaahk (from 1001° Centigrades

Yep. I find it very strange actually. Every Hawkwind review I've ever read has made me think: 'Hot damn! This is an album for me! Most definitely!!' I then return to Warriors and am left completely under whelmed.

No contest for me -- Magma for sure.

And I also find Stoah (that over-the-top Hitler impression) and lots of other Magma music great fun. The first two Magma tracks I heard I would consider great fun ( 'Iss' Lansei Doia and Liriïk Necronomicus Kanht) and, yeah the Maahnt burps are very funny. What I alove so much about Magma is that it can be so over-the-top and then spiritual and beautiful... Great band. Another fun thing is when you mishear lyrics (doesn't matter if the fun is intentional or nor, one can bring one's own sense of fun to the proceedings). For instance, in E Re II, I mishear hear "ove supreme" lyrics as "Gotta love that knee, oh that knee". Hers a classic misheard lyrics vid:

Stoah is my idea of fun. Infact their two first albums are pure joy. And how about those burps on Maahnt (The Wizard's Fight Versus the Devil)? Funniest sh*t ever.
Stoah comes across quite angry and .......serious....
Maahnt comes across as demented.......and serious.
I love these tracks to death (from heart-attack....) and love what Magma do, just my perception of Vander and his cohorts is serious focus and understanding. You have to be seriously committed to your instrument, and you have to be seriously committed to your vocal delivery/style. Maybe they themselves had a challenging sort of 'fun' element to their work, but it comes across serious to my perception. How can you perform this magnitude of complexity and starkness with a smile on your face, unless you are dead serious......??
Sure, it may be a 'fun' listen, but I seriously doubt that's their intention. I'm sure I read in a translated interview with Vander, that he stated that 'every time I hit a cymbal, means death to someone' ....(either bad translation or I'm misinterpreting the claim, or my brain is fried from years ago..... )....

Indeed. I am quite (pleasantly) surprised that Hawkwind is winning thins on. I have always had the impression that The Hawks were not all that popular around these parts - and Magma was pretty well thought of as one of the big names.

They are certainly more than 'dirty spacepunks' which is reasonably insulting and makes me feel quite glad that it has upset you. BTW an 'almost' randomly chosen album is a chosen album.

(I am now beginning to feel like Kevin Keegan and his 'love it' speech. So no doubt Magma will make a dramatic come back its close run thing) .

Oh I like Hawkwind very much but I still feel dirty spacepunks is very fitting. Saw them live last year and loved every old tune they played and hated every single newish one. It was a fantastic and awful experience.

They are certainly more than 'dirty spacepunks' which is reasonably insulting and makes me feel quite glad that it has upset you.
Oh I like Hawkwind very much but I still feel dirty spacepunks is very fitting. Saw them live last year and loved every old tune they played and hated every single newish one. It was a fantastic and awful experience.

Maybe, but you used it in a negative way. I really enjoyed the new stuff they played last time I saw them after blood of the Earth. Although the best thing they played was You'd Better Believe it. I think that (Blood) and the last (Onward) are both excellent albums.

When I saw them on the Blood Of The Earth tour they did, I enjoyed every second of it - and they played Wraith and Sentinel - my utter faves from the album. And to witness Moonweed Blake in action was just out-bloody-rageous !!

it is not over yet. As long as it stays close. A think there are a fair number of us sitting on our votes for this one as some are big fans of both. I feel myself beginning to finally lean one way on this, but I'm not voting until right before closing time.

Clap I do honor my word. Easily bought here, I love both groups but truth is, a good buy.. I was leaning Magma. Mainly out of lust for Stella Vander..

39-38 Hawkwind.

but yes... I do think there are a couple that are holding on to the last minute.

LOL I can relate as a lifelong Democrat who has only not voted straight ticket only once in his life. Gone down in the flames of defeat many more times than savoring victory. However we stick to our core values as well as our favs. Unpopularity be damned! Clap

Hawkwind's pulling ahead late, so finally I'll throw my bone here, and it's to Magma. Love 'em both. Let's see what happens.

Voting against a band that had both Lemmy and a naked chick in it seems like utter blasphemy to my ideals, but Magma's Kohntarkosz alone just blows me away more than even Hawkwind's spacey freakouts.

And now tied! It looked like Hawkwind was going to pull away at the end. It will be a shame to have to close this one. One hour!

Don't let it end in a tie. Someone has to break the tie, then tie again, then break it again haha.

I did eventually vote several days ago for Magma but I felt bad for not voting Hawkwind, this really is a flip of the coin for me, and I agree with Micky that i'm happy for whoever wins.

I'm amazed really, not because I don't think Hawkwind don't deserve this, but because I didn't think there were enough people around PA who liked them enough. I also thought Magma were much more popular - I suspect that they are the 'Marmite' of the Prog world? To be honest, I was happy just giving Magma a run for thir money but to get them through to the next round is a bonus.

Yay!

Big smile

Dude, one of these bands dreams of space travel and the other is from another planet. I think the choice is obvious
