From the Eclectric Conference we have the decisive winner of a 1st Rd matchup with Mahavishnu Orchestra

From England.

GENTLE GIANT!!!

From the RPI Confererence we have the winner of a very tight match with Talk Talk

From Italy

AREA!!!!

Vegas has installed Gentle Giant as a 20 vote favorite.  Can Area keep it close.  Perhaps but it is only because it is Area that the spread is not much higher.  Gentle Giant is a dark horse for many to make it all the way to the final 4.

I don't think Area is going to have what it takes to pull this one off.

Originality vs. originality.

Not a fan of the Giant. My vote goes for Area...

I never understood the Giant, bought the Giant in the Box DVD and there it is gathering spider webs in the bottom of the "I will never play them again" box of albums.

They are what I call complexity for the sake of complexity.

Area is simply wonderful.

I disagree at least partly on that.
True, their credo was to be as adventurous as possible (as they stated in the liner notes in one of their early albums), which might have led them to some 'complexity for the sake of complexity'.
But - and of course this is highly personal - I find an album like Acquiring The Taste as enjoyable as some of the early Genesis albums, pure ear candy.

exclude the first albums with Phil Shuman and I'd agree with you Ivan. GG had two very definable and easy to hear musical phases. Phil and post Phil. The later albums were good, but lacked atmosphere or soul as I call it. Technically perfect complex music but zero connection to the soul.  However those first albums did have it. A track like Schooldays that can bring tears to your eyes never would have been, nor was ever, done by GG 2ed.

If anything, I find their music surprisingly lucid for the amount of complexity it involves.  Their execution is usually very precise and clear-minded.  Very tight with hardly an extra note.  It is the silly goofiness that Shulman's vocals bring to the table that, I think, turns off a lot of listeners.  I kind of find it charming but I can see why it might make it difficult for people to take the band seriously.

Well, I'd say: exclude the first three or four GG albums. I agree with you, though, Micky.
Not a big fan of post-Phil GG, with some songs as an exception.

Keeping it respectable.  Well done Area fans. Clap  Closer than I suppose Talk Talk would have been. I was surprised actually that was as close as it was. Having modern bands against classic bands is not the best recipee for close contests, especially bands not exactly readily recognized as bands that should even be IN the contest.

Tough call, but I'm going with Area. They're even more original than GG, which I can't say about many bands.

oh no.  Deep seated ideals and strong notions of right and wrong. Crossing my notions on those can possess me faster than any demon or group could. LOL

Area would just be the soundtrack for fighting the power.  Thumbs Up

Nahh AREA, quite simply, for being one of my fave Italian bands.
