From Planet Gong... we have... Gong! Clap

From planet Geek... we have.. Rush!! Clap

Vegas has Rush as a 10 vote favorite.  Can Gong pull the upset. It is possible if the anti-Rush forces mobilize and the pro-Rush forces are distracted by the upcoming holiday.  We shall see!

Gong all the way!!!  Though I do enjoy the hell out of some Rush.

ExactlyBig smile

I went with Gong, quite easily to, but they're no match for Rush in the end. I'm merely speculating here, but I foresee at least a 10-15 gap between them in the end.
One shouldn't underestimate the power of Rush on PA. Whenever you see a Gong fan you will have seen 10 of Rush'.

oh yeah.  Final bit of advice from Doctor Micky.

If you are 18... stuck asking your Neil Peart poster over your bed why the hot blond won't give you the time of day .. even when decked out in your cool denim jacket with the 2112 patch on the back... do yourself a favor.

Start right now on the road to getting hot chicks..  see that little button up  there that says GONG.. hit it and vote for Gong...  start dressing like a hippy and digging Gong albums and lose the Rush gear and especially the Neil Peart poster.. no self respecting chick is letting you take her with Neil Peart looking over you two.

ahhh  ..sorry Canadians..I stand corrected...  you still have my sympathies.. for being lumped in as Rush fanatics out of some perverse patriotism.....show your independence then... VOTE GONG!!!! LOL

When I lived in Michigan.. at least we got off great and easy.  We got a steady diet of Bob Segar and Ted Nugent. Seeming every other song I ever seem hear on the radio was from either of those two.

God help you if you have Rush playing all the damn time LOL

some points to take from the tournament so far

1) ELP going a long way to re-establishing some respect and love on this forum
2) the Gong Army being a force to be reckoned with. Quite the fanbase
3) the Italians have quite a fanbase here, with only one disappointing result... SOON TO BE AVENGED LOLLOLAngry

it was a little much to expect them to win against Gentle Giant (the only one that will knock them out will be a 'big heavy'... it was Osanna that didn't show well.. against a group that only did ONE thing better than Osanna.

Speak better English and have a larger fanbase. AngryLOL

well we shall see how this best example of English paternalism of 2nd rate prog, whose best albums were done PRE-PROG.. does against the greatest and perhaps most respected of all 'foreign' prog groups. I expect a war,  but hope to have a close match. ELP-Camel sort of reaffirmed my faith in the forum to judge fairly and loss the bullsh*t they've had tossed in their ears by critics and haters.. we shall see if 2nd rate English music will trump 1st rate non-English music.

I don't think we have as many anti-anything members as we used to have, although there still is a healthy population of folks who run screaming for the hills whenever DT gets mentioned, but just before their hike they take out the time to enlighten the rest of us on how awful the music is. That goes for ELP as well, but we can't change the world all at once. Like I said, it's not nearly as bad as it was a few years ago, and that pleases me immenselyBig smile

Still, a little poke here and a little stab there don't hurt anybody and adds a little hoho to what otherwise might turn into a librarians' convention.

yes, along with some obvious changes in the general forum atmosphere here since the old wild-west days, I have most certainly seen that. Another reason why I thought ELP might well really give Camel a run for their money. The anti-factions are definitely not as strong as they once were here.

oh and I do live for a little poking and stabbing.. it was easier back when the general forum knew me and my style well... I have had to be a bit more careful with all the new folks around perhaps not recognizing it isn't anything mean-spirited ...just all in fun. Nothing sucks more than a dull forum.

Yes, I've noticed that the contingent of those who won't touch anything in a language other than English with the proverbial ten-foot pole seems to have dwindled to almost nothing. Like you, I am not a native speaker of English, and I teach my own native language for a living, therefore that attitude really got on my nerves big time. A few years ago I even wrote an essay for my blog, which you (or others) might be interested in reading - triggered by an extremely stupid remark found in a Prog mag review: http://progmistress.com/2011/07/27/speak-english-or-die-prog-in-other-languages/" rel="nofollow - http://progmistress.com/2011/07/27/speak-english-or-die-prog-in-other-languages/

The language of music is universal. AFAIC, the less chatter (in what ever tongue), the better Clap

What I would not touch even with a barge pole is English language lyrics that were written and/or sung by someone who did it for commercial purposes only, without a compelling emotional reason for doing so. My favorite (and very negative) example would be Garota D' Ipanema "translated", or rather re-written into English for facilitating the US sales. As the result, The Girl From Ipanema words in English sounds corny and stale.

I looked up the original lyrics, picked up a few dozen Portuguese words, learned how to pronounce them, and guess what - I am glad I did. Stimulation and learning new things is what keeps your brain alive. Besides, I felt like I had a unique chance to peek into the long gone Carioca world of the early 1960s.

I would encourage all songwriters outside of the Anglosphere to consider writing poetry in the language they are most comfortable with, to keep it genuine and eloquent. As for the listeners .. online translators are free to use and they are getting better, so no-one is going to die if a band sings in Norwegian or Italian.

Once I have worked through my post-divorce financial misery (tentatively expected by mid-2015 Geek), I would be interested in learning Italian .. I love the fact that it's phonetic and feels unisex, and doesn't involve making unpleasant sounds .. unless I am deluding myself LOL

Do they also teach the art of Italian gesticulation ibidem?

Hmm, having posted this I notice that I am unable to vote in this poll (or any others!). Is this a function of my 'newbiness' and/or small number of posts? As I couldn't see it in the FAQ, can someone inform me of the criteria for being allowed to vote?

pffff  LOLLOLLOL  do you really think people here care about respect of our fellow members

you are talking about the same forum in which Camel, a 2nd rate generic prog group, has beaten ELP.

TWICE!! LOLClap

A forum that is, has, and likely always will vote for 2nd class English language prog over 1st rate foreign language prog.

Seriously man... what respect is there left TO lose. Wink  A source of entertainment this place is, but definitely not the fountain of good solid objective thought.

Unlike Rush, Gong has given us a musical family: Steve Hillage/System 7, Didier Malherbe, Mother Gong, New York Gong, Tim Blake, etc. etc. to name but a few, not to mention the wonderful jazz fusion that the band evolved into under Pierre Moerlen's leadership which drew in Mike Oldfield among other leading musicians.  Rush, on the other hand, from the early 80s continued to produce albums of increasing mediocrity.  There is simply no contest (especially on a prog forum).

^ Yep, the PA-pulation in general treats Rush as a top tier prog band, which it, quite frankly, is not. Despite all the good work they have done throughout the past 40 years.

Well judging by the amount of fanboys, polls and assorted threads having to do with Rush I've seen over the years, then they should be winning by a landslide.
Maybe they're all on holiday somewhere faaaaaaar away from Santa mania and all those mad people (mostly mothers I guess) who go absolutely ape-feces over important issues such as gravy thickness, ornamentations, gift wrapping paper, sweets and how the family will react to the cleanliness of the windowsWacko

Of course Rush is a top tier prog band.

Sales, longevity, influence - they qualify on all counts as top flight.

There are no true "prog" bands anymore....but Rush comes as close as any band right now. Most are crossover bands that are heavy into electronic, indie, alternative, rock........

They only disguise themselves as a second rate generic prog group.
Once you've classified them as that, then suddenly... BANG! you find out that you like them as much as the best prog groups, like ELP.
It may happen to you too, so be warned! WinkSmile

I'd agree with that.

To slightly re-phrase: the present day definition of prog is as vast as it's vague. Sometimes I feel it may be easier to define what's not prog Geek

OK, OK, a top tier it is.

Sales and Longevity: These are tell-tale hallmarks of prog since when?

(Hint: since Michael Jackson, Bee Gees, Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra and James Last orchestra Wacko)

Influence: I am not educated in this matter. Care to elucidate?

I'm discussing whether they are top tier, not whether they are prog.

It likely will.LOL  You've seen the mean age of the forumites here. Most haven't even likely had their first piece of ass yet or even been divorced yet LOL  LOL

Who do you think makes up the Rush army.. the Geddy is God.. or Peart is God kiddies Wink
As with most things that you say Micky, I take exception, however will gladly admit that Rush be the fountain of youth for some of us old guys.  I can't say that I see the appeal of a bunch of pixie potheads myself, but then again I've always taken pride in living a drug-free existence.
