Magazine vs. Rites of Spring Magazine was formed by Howard Devoto wanting to pursue a less traditional sound. With the inclusion of John McGeoch, they were inspiration to the likes of Radiohead and other bands who also pursued less traditional sounds. Rites of Spring are considered one of the first emo bands along with Ian MacKaye's Embrace. Pushing hardcore punk into emotive riffs and harmonies, they created a unique sound such that caught the ear of Ian MacKaye and guitarist/vocalist Guy Picciotto would go on to form Fugazi with Ian MacKaye. ------------- https://dreamwindow.bandcamp.com/releases" rel="nofollow - My Music

Howerd Devoto etc for some brilliantly inventive, ahead of its time music. Almost certainly influenced by prog - and what a time to come up with this 1977! A bit difficult to compare these two. ------------- Help me I'm falling! |

I only just got Rites of Spring a couple of months ago, so I'm not that familiar yet. I think Magazine is a pretty unique band though, as close to prog as post-punk got back then. I think I have to go with Mag. I do love Rites of Spring, but I'm going to have to agree with the above votes. John McGeoch is one of my favorite guitarists of the post-punk scene.

Not familiar with Rites Of Spring, so no vote from me. I do however think they'll have a hard time surpassing Magazine. My vote goes to Magazine. Never really got that much into Rites of Spring, Fugazi and that whole scene they inspired. Maybe there is some kind of Europe vs. America cultural barrier going on? Guess I'll have to be the one to show some love to Rites. Their dour yet hammy hardcore was a unique touchstone of the '80's, really good and influential stuff. Real Life is itself excellent, of course. Strange but wonderful discovery.
