Gang of Four vs. Mission of Burma Gang of Four were the next step from The Clash. Mixing funk and dub into their punk stew, they were the progenitors of dance punk. Easy vote for Burma. Gang of Four is one of those bands I enjoy kind of in spite of themselves. I mean, Maoist dance-punk? Need to listen to Mission of Burma more than I do, they were a big influence on the US noise rock scene which I like way more than GoF and most of what they in turn inspired. As you can guess, I generally prefer punk to be sociopathic more than socialistic. Just realized that both band names reference totalitarian East Asian states. I was trying to find a representative song from Mission of Burma's "Obliterati" (2006) album to post here, but I just couldn't decide on one. Also, they don't really sound that great coming through my dinky computer speakers. But please check that album out, and let those guitars roar their way through your guts. | Mission of Burma...hometown band. Love 'Signals, Calls and Marches' and I even like their oddball 'Forget' album a lot. There's sort of a desperation to their sound & vocals that I don't hear very often, as if they really are stuck in Burma. |
