Finally, after years of reading-only participation, I decided to take a few minutes to register :P
Hello everybody! Big smile
I'm Andrea (no jokes, in Italy it's exclusevely a male name!) from Crescenzago (a district of Milan which I'm planning to turn into an independent city someday, just for fun), I'm 26, I'm a hopefullly-soon-to-be psychologist and, of course, I'm a great fan of progressive music, in almost all of its shades and flavours.
Obviously, being Italian, I grew very fond of the local progressive scene, starting from main acts like PFM and Banco e going on with the various obscure, underestimated, forgotten one-shot bands ("Does anybody else listen to them, apart from you and their relatives?" -> quote from my dad. What the heck, dad); but I also love symphonic, Canterburian, jazzy, folk and metal stuff.
If I had to write down a Prog pantheon top 10 list, aware that tomorrow the list would be probably different, I'd say: Rush, King Crimson, Genesis, Pink Floyd, PFM, Yes, Jethro Tull, ELP, Biglietto Per l'Inferno, Museo Rosenbach.
That's all, I guess.
See you around! Stay hammond, stay foolish :D

Glad you're here!
I enjoy a lot of those Italian one-shots, as you put it.  Some really nice avant-garde stuff came out of that area, especially near the end of the 1970s.  I was introduced to the music of Franco Battiato (thanks to my friends on here) and went from there.
Hope you have a good time.  It's a big place, but you'll find your way around I'm sure.

Do I need to tell you that the proper spelling is Milano? Big smile. I have been known for lecturing some local "Italian" restaurant owners that there ain't no such thing in Italy as Florence, Venice and Rome .. how about Firenze, Venezia and Roma instead Geek

On a more serious note, welcome to PA. Hope you will enjoy yourself as much as most of the folks here have.

Welcome aboard
Huge fan of the (old school) Italian scene here as well. Not too fond of the new wave of RPI bands, but I have come across some interesting ones. Labyrinto di Specchio fx is a wonderful new band and I hope they get themselves together at one point and release a second album. The first one was brilliant.

Oh and a quick shout out to Battiato from me as well!!! The man is a genius.

I am not sure if there is a written rule for this, but it's quite common for a Continental European country to be called something different in English, whereas city names ar left relatively unmolested more often.

Suomi vs. Finland, but Helsinki is the same
Deutschland vs. Germany, but Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt and even Schweinfurt are the same
Magyarország vs. Hungary, but Budapest
Schweiz, Suisse, Svizzera vs. Switzerland, but they didn't change Locarno and Lugano to "Lockarn" and "Loogan"

That said, I have just remembered that they put a cute little "n" into LisboaGeek
