What hypothetical box would you pounce on?

Couple spring to mind for me:

Coil - Mostly unavailable catalogue going for silly prices. Innovative, esoteric music that deserves to be heard. I'm sort of surprised this hasn't happened already.

Bondage Fruit - I'd spring for a box of I to VI like a shot. Try finding II, IV or V anywhere...such a shame this music is OOP and unavailable.

Usually bands that I don't own anything by but are really important. A good example is the Columbia 5 disc set for Mahavishnu Orchestra which I am very happy with.
There is apparently a great box set for Magma that people in the know snapped up pretty quick. I would have liked that one but its now virtually impossible to get.
Others I would like (some may exist)
Kraftwerk
Klaus Schulze ( is that possible??!)
The Police ( not prog but would be a nice neat 5 disc set)
Steely Dan (used to be a nice box set , does it still exist?)

a Klaus Schulze box might be large, but possible.  I've seen 100-disc sets of some classical composers, and the box wasn't overly gigantic, so size isn't a problem.  Also, of course, there might be two or three or twenty boxes.

I'd like to see a box of Sun Ra's Saturn Records albums, many of which were only a few hundred copies on first release.

a lot of the bands I'd like to get box sets of (complete studio catalogues) have been done in Japan - those mini-album sets that cost about $600 each. I cant afford that .. so I'd like to see affordable versions of:

- Van der Graaf Generator
- Steve Miller Band
- Alan Parsons Project (this may be out already)
- David Bowie
- Gentle Giant
- Camel
- Dire Straits (and Mark Knopfler)
- 10CC
- Hawkwind
- Anthony Phillips

and a couple hundred more bands from the 70's

Yep, Steely Dan box set is still available:

Czesław Niemen definitely. Even good reeditions of his old albums are few and boxset of all his works is something I'd buy right away.

Still confuses me how VdGG doesn't have a box set...

Hi,

I don't know ... I have not bought a single box set, and sometimes, I think I don't want to, because I am not a "fan" ... and afte 15 CD's by Ozric's, 25 by TD, 30 by Schulze, and the like ... I do not know why I would need the box set!

I simply find that the remasteres and what not are not as good ... and in some cases, the "feeling" has been tone down from the original ... and this is my biggest issue ... I remember the likes of the bootlegs and the "other" quality, and that is still not showing anywhere.

Exception: Tangerine Dream .... is the only difference, but it's all there already, including so many live concerts to hurt your ears! Why is a box needed? maybe for all the soundtracks? ... Like 50 of them?

A Schulze box, like a Tangerine Dream box, would have to be constructed of an extremely sturdy material, shipped on a crate, and off-loaded with a forklift. LOL Yeah, that would certainly be cost-prohibitive.

A Kraftwerk box is very doable. Their discography is surprisingly small (though they could pad it out with singles and live performances), and it looks like they did release one in 2009, titled simply Der Katalog. http://www.discogs.com/Kraftwerk-Der-Katalog/master/199394" rel="nofollow - http://www.discogs.com/Kraftwerk-Der-Katalog/master/199394

Curved Air deserve a box set, but it's possible that they may already have one. I screwed up by not researching first! However...a Curved Air box set that would feature unreleased material with Eddie Jobson on one disc, a concert of the original band featuring Francis Monkman that would completely differ from their "Live 75' album, and to boot...unreleased studio material of the original band!

Talking about Kraftwerk, first of all they would have to include their first three (3) albums in said box...

The police one exists, kind of - Band in A Box - 3 discs of all the album tracks, plus some extras - fairly nice set

Hi,

I think there have been a couple by KSchulze, but they were a private/small number only. I think that there was one for KS that had 10 CD's several years back, and Eurock had them. The same for AshRa Tempel, and I think it was called "Private Tapes".

I think that these were not, originally, released to the public, other than the hardcore fans ... don't quote me on that!

that's the thing that confuses me ... are they not official ?
I thought the companies that made these had some kind of special licencing ..
why would bootlegs be worth so much just because they have nice packaging? doesn't make sense

this explains it .. many are official releases but there are fakes based on them ... like anything.
I almost bought a fake Beatles Boxset until I did some research first

MAGMA
Tool (Salival, while great, doesn't count)

EDIT:  Also, this was just announced.
http://www.yesworld.com/2015/03/yes-progeny-live-from-seventy-two/
I might pick up the vinyl "Highlights" set.  Yes were ridiculous in that era.  Even though know this is true, since that's what they seem to be content with trying to recreate live year after year...

...unless you're talking about these Magma bands:

...but I doubt you're talking about the last one (the German Magma), since they released only one LP!

Thinking about that, I realize that I never heard about Japanese bands having their discography compiled into a boxset: a Koenjihyakkei boxset would be nice and sweet!

I do believe that such an extraordinary bass-player that has done for sooooo much according to bass-playing and experimenting with it, whether it be with a Keyboards player, a drummer; or whatever........ I do believe that Hugh Hopper deserves some sort of accolade.
When I listen to Hugh, multiple Worlds open up, he did play alongside some of Prog's most visionary artists, he did 'twist' the instrument to unheard of possibilities, he was a close friend with Alan Gowen ( Two Rainbows Daily solidifies this statement), and really, Hugh has performed for a large percentage of Canterbury artists, even guesting with Mother Gong. Plenty of material to work with right there............and respect...........

I would like to see a Secret Oyster box set. All four of their original LPs have been released on CD and would make a nice set.
Also, Nova would be great to have in a set. Their first three LPs are on CD but I couldn't find the fourth in that format.

(While looking around I found a nice BOC set with the first three CDs. Amazon has it for $35 and it is very tempting.)

I have never seen that anywhere.  Amazon has it used for 500 freaking dollars.  Ouch.  None on eBay.  I guess I can't blame myself for being unaware.

You could try keeping an eye on Discogs. There have been copies on there fairly recently at non-silly prices.

They are also bringing out a similar box set of their live albums. I believe it's supposed to be released towards the end of this year.

Rumor has it Edgar Froese owned tapes of every Tangerine Dream concert.
Given his recent passing a box with the soundboard recordings from all their 1975 concerts would be a great way to honour him, and a dream come true for the fans!

There used to be two box-sets of his music issued some 8 - 9 years ago:

I've got the second one. Approve
