Ancestral, but this whole album was brilliance and had nice metal influences, which I thought were lacking in The Raven

Ancestral for me too, love that Wilson's bringing back the metal. I hear a bit of Mastodon influence in there.

I still think The Raven was his best effort (even better than porcupine tree), but this is one amazing album, the second best of his solo stuff, imo.

3 Years Older is my favourite at the moment.
But there's great tracks, Routine, Ancestral, Home Invasion, even the pop-ish Hand Cannot Erase is a great track, just like Trains was on In Absentia.

I think it's a 5 star album, need more listenings to be sure.

People,

I will try to explain the how the first 3 tracks made me feel on first hearing:

track 1. i smiled at the warped tape sounding of this.
track 2. i laughed at how much this sounded like rush's Hemispheres
track 3. i cried because i KNOW this is too good for a grammy.

Have you heard the tripe that passes for a grammy award?  This is too good.

Grammys aren't given out for good MUSIC...  They are awarded for PERFORMANCES.  I know POP music fanatics that would agree with this statement, but they find this way of thinking acceptable.

I think there should be another REAL MUSICIANSHIP award.  This album would definitely get multiple awards.

... haha... and you certainly wont find any of it on a juke box..

I guess this album will be hailed by an army of devotees. Nevertheless I can foretell with a high level of probability that this album will not make it to my top 10 at the end of the year. But still it's good and quite enjoyable with a number of good songs: #1 and #5-#8 being the best imho. I voted for First Regret.

The album's decent. No better.

In fact, you know something's up when SWilson's foray into electronic rock isn't as up to snuff as Archive's release this year, Restriction.

Opener's the best track.

Well I absolutely love it but then that's on the first listen. Raven as much as I like it is weirdly 'ordinary' or perhaps 'trite' could be a better description despite its ambition. This on the other hand goes in so many directions that I would have a much harder time describing some of the tracks. Also this grabs me emotionally while at times I felt a bit detached with Raven. Almost had me thinking this could have been Deadwing Part 2 , that being the album that drew me into his music in the first place. Picking a track is hard but my first instinct is to go for Regret #9 for the great synth solo , the best I've heard for a long time. Shades of Rick Wright-Wish You Were Here era for certain.

Well....I am a fan of all the PT albums especially the earlier ones but the Wilson ones never appealed to me as much. I have yet to buy Raven and I have listened to this new one on you tube and it's not knocking my socks off. I would like to see him get back with the PT members and do another album like Signify, In Absentia, or Stupid Dream.

They also usually have the latest from Transatlantic, Riverside, Opeth, Marillion. However, they have been diminishing the amount they have. Before, they had some of the back discography from many of this bands, but lately they have gotten more wary about it. They used to have the whole discography of Pink Floyd, Yes, Dream Theater, PT, Rush, I think even Frank Zappa (whom I have not seen there anymore). They used to have some back discography from Rick Wakeman, Gentle Giant, Camel too, now I think they have nothing from them. I even got one or two RPI albums there.

Yes, it is a bit rich coming from me but you're clearly trolling here, being more than a tad polemical here (and I'm not even a Steven Wilson fan) I've only heard Hand. Cannot. Erase twice but I think it suffers the same inconsistencies that spoiled Raven i.e. I really think Wilson needs a break, the cracks are starting to show, too many simultaneous projects/remixing tasks, he's clearly overworked...(but still a hugely talented individual/control freak) I didn't vote, there's more than enough knee jerk reactionaries around here.

I haven't heard the album (though I eventually will, even if just for curiosity's sake), but I tend to side with Steve regarding the widespread SW worship. Personally, I think there are a lot of bands/artists currently active on the prog scene that are as talented as he is, and a lot of albums released in the past five years or so that are more interesting than any of SW's (or Porcupine Tree's, for that matter) albums. However, I am smart enough to realize I am in the minority on this particular issue.

This thread is a poll for his latest album's contents. It is not a thread to bash his popularity or music. I am sure there are threads already existing for that discussion. These are the kind of posts which derail threads. Negative.

Posted By: SteveG
Date Posted: March 03 2015 at 13:25
^I thought this poll was a place to comment on Wilson's current work. If member's perspectives are involved in determining the quality of that current work, then those perspectives are relevant to the criticism.

I'll go a bit further and emphasize that I still purchase all the music I comment on. Once that purchase is enacted, I have the right  to truthfully voice my like or dislike for said artist's work, regardless if people want to hear it or not.

Furthermore, those that feel intimidated to voice displeasure at an artist's work, for fear of the going against a majority opinion, fail in their responsibility to critique such art.

In case I didn't make myself clear, there are no songs on this album that are worth voting for. A poll was proposed and I answered it truthfully. Believe it or not, truthful criticism is a sign that someone cares.

Voted for Routine.

This album is way better than Raven. Can't say if it's better than Grace for Drowning or Insurgentes, but it's definitely a great work and one of his best albums. And lyrically, the concept itself is surely his best work.

Never understood moanings from people who want porcupine Tree to reunite, Wilson's solo work is a clear continuation of Porcupine Tree in every possible way. And a major improvement since then as well. And I'm rather surprised by all the hatred towards electronic sound. Men, it' progressive rock, not the repeating of what's been created back in 1969. Have you ever heard of Avant-Prog, Progressive Electronic, Krautrock etc?

This could well overtake The Sky Moves Sideways and Voyage 34 as my favourite Wilson album. I enjoyed Raven but I think that has more variety.

Voted for Ancestral - but plenty of competition from a number of the tracks.

Posted By: ole-the-first

Overall I'm happy that Wilson returned to more modern sound instead of trying to repeat Genesis (which are not just unrepeatable, but doesn't need any repeat). The Raven was terribly overrated here. Even although the songwriting was on pretty high level there, it wasn't Wilson's best work, methinks. It had virtually nothing new to say.

feeling quite smug that I got the Blu Ray edition. Great sound , images ( a series of 'mocked up' photos that appear very real) and an excellent documentary that is 30 minutes long. You can also have an instrumental version of the album if you want. Wasn't that expensive either ( less than a tenner)Smile

Listened to it again via you tube......good solid songs - Wilson doesn't write bad music-,  but to me they all sound like re-workings or variations of earlier material with PT and things he's done before. That's not a bad thing nor a criticism per se but I have trouble getting excited about any of his solo albums ( I did like several tracks on Raven since I like that retro sound...)  and I like the melodies and tracks better on the older albums with PT. I simply don't see any major changes nor that he's writing better material than he did in the past.

That's one of the more frustrating things about Wilson, album to album there doesn't sound like there's much evolution, but go back five or six reeases it seems like he's progressed a bunch. He'd really benefit from slowing down his output, maybe put out material once every five years or so as opposed to something every single year.

3 Years Older, the chorus is just amazing, I really dig the acoustic guitar that gives it an almost folk vibe on some parts. But I'm really hooked with this album. Happy Returns/Ascendant Here On..., Perfect Life and Routine hit me really hard on an emotional level, Home Invasion/Regret #9 and Ancestral are simply mindblowing. The whole album is marvelous!

Posted By: Dellinger
Date Posted: March 24 2015 at 22:42
At last I got this album... but I don't think I can pick a song yet. So far the one I have been coming back most is Perfect Life... but I guess that's mainly because it's the most recognizable, I really don't think it will be my favourite from the album. I guess it will end up being one of the songs that come after that one (Routine, Home Invasion, or Ancestral). There's one which has a keyboard part that really reminds me of ELP (bordering on rip-off)... I guess it's Ancestral... that one might just as well end up being the one.

I still do like to see Porcupine Tree reunited where Mr Wilson will get some new energy and then the band perhaps will release a really masterpiece of contemporary prog.

I actually laughed. Well played.

I sampled this album a bit very soon after it got released. For some reason i just felt unmoved by what i heard. Musically it sounded pretty unadventurous, which has been the case with recent Swilson albums.
I used to go out and buy blind any Swilson album, did it with the last 3 PT albums and his solo albums until Raven. Since then he has kind of lost me a bit. Raven was amazing in some parts, but the lengthier tracks just sounded formulaic. Somehow Swilson sounds a lot more progressive and unexpected when he sticks to his more alt-rock influences. Grace by Drowning and Insurgentes is some of the best things he has ever touched, but since then i've been disappointed with his sound.

I'll be giving this a proper listen soon, because it still is Swilson - but it'll have to work hard to sway how i already feel.

The shops here have tons of the older prog material. I can find Amon Duul, anything by Zappa, Yes, Genesis, Can, Camel, younameit from the 70's, it's probably here. Unfortunately, they don't have much of the newer variety. They do have Tool, but no PT/Steven Wilson, no Spock's Beard, no Anglagard, no Beardfish. Some of this is to be expected I guess, but they didn't even have the new Muse album that came out.

Note, it's the longer pieces that get the votes (duh). Wilson and his band of merry men have a way to develop outstanding epics which never fail to please the MAJORITY of Progheads.
I am truly baffled that naysayers exist in regards to SW....... To me, he is the main torchbearer for modern Prog. There are many keeping Prog alive for sure, but none more successful and widely known as SW. I adore 70's Prog, and most things these days get compared to those amazing things, but SW really capitalises on melding up-to-date music stylings with regard to the classics, without sounding 'neo'. Hats off to him.
