Really, really, really tough choice between Genesis and King Crimson. Animals was the beginning of the end of the Floyd I loved, as the vocals took a turn harsher and the music, to me, sounded like a rehash of elements of DSOM and WYWH. Although I can listen to it all the way through, unlike The Wall or anything they did since except for The Division Bell, it doesn't rank in even my Top 1,000 albums of all time.
So for the actual choice, I went with King Crimson, and instantly regretted not voting for Selling England By The Pound. Of course, if I had voted for Genesis, I would have instantly regretted not voting for In The Court Of The Crimson King.
Love 'em both, and they are two completely different albums. KC always has a special place in my heart, though, for it was the first true prog album I ever heard, way back in 1972, and changed my musical life forever.
(Of course, I'll never forget hearing for the first time, "Can you tell me where my country lies?")

If there are any fanboys we need to eliminate it the ones that somehow see In the Court as a masterpiece.

Battle Of Epping Forest - lazy stuff with naff all musical content stretched beyond breaking point
More Fool Me - what's this doing here?
I Know What I Like - catchy but not exactly earth shattering stuff
The rest is admittedly Grade A classic symphonic prog but the aforementioned tracks rule this album out from being a masterpiece

In The Court suffers a little bit on Side Two and I would also rule this out although overall its a little better

Animals doesn't have an weak moments for me so that gets my vote.

^I know many don't but I love Battle of Epping Forest (I do have to be in the right mood, admittedly).
I used to not like More Fool Me. I could not bear to even listen to it passively, but it has aged on to my like list.
I don't care for I know What I Like much, but it makes for a change of pace.
I don't care for Firth of Fifth except for guitar solo, which is beyond stupendous.
After the Ordeal is another one that has grown in my estimation over the years. It might be my favorite thing on the album now currently.
I voted for SEBT

But you see - Selling England is okay having a 4.63

In the Court shouldn't break 3.5

From my review of SEBTP:

"I cannot believe this album is so popular when, to my ears at least, both Foxtrot and The Lamb are clearly superior. This was actually my first Gabriel-era Genesis album; I can understand why so many would like it at first. After hearing Foxtrot and Trick over the years, my appreciation for SEPTB has dropped considerably. "I Know" and "More Fool Me" are in no way, shape or form "prog". "Battle" would have been better if it was half its current length. The most frustrating thing about this album is that it actually contains some of the bands best musical moments(Dancing, Firth, Cinema)"

From my review of ITCOTKC:

"To call this the first prog album is nothing short of a complete slap in the face to artists like Zappa, Floyd, The Nice, Moody Blues, Procol Harum and East Of Eden and what they were doing before this album was released. Listen to Uncle Meat and Ummagumma(both released in 1969); those two albums make ITCOTCK sound like the Monkees! ..... As much as I like what Crimson did from '69-'71, I really don't think they "found themselves" until LTIA"

From my review of Animals:

"This album didn't quite do as well sales wise as the previous two. That's understandable because there was no song suitable for radio. Animals is also more adventurous musically than those two albums. For people who loved this album when it came out, it must have been a shock to hear The Wall for the first time. This once great band's last good album. After this they became 'Roger Waters featuring Pink Floyd' and then later, 'The David Gilmour Band'. Still, for an album released in January 1977, it's pretty proggy. Pink Floyd could only make a more mainstream and radio-friendly album after this."

I voted for Animals

Tricky. I'll vote Animals as it doesn't as it's consistently good throughout. The other two have at least one weak track.

Animals, easily. Selling England puts me to sleep, and In the Court is a promising debut, but isn't a masterpiece imo.

Selling England for it's Knight, Firth and Cinema... and btw Battle isn's as bad IMO (it's in style of their similar stuff like Harrold the Barrel, Get 'em out by Friday or Robbery, Assault & Battery...) And why everyone omits beautiful short song After the Ordeal I don't know - this one I love too.
Crimsons are a small step below this and Animals is waaaaay down of those both records....

Animals for me. Against some other Floyd albums I might have chosen The Crimson King, which is also great. Selling England is also my favourite album from Genesis, but sadly it conains Epping Forest which drops at least one star from it.

It's exactly stuff like Harrold the Barrel, Get 'em out by Fryday, Epping Forest itself, that drags down every album from the classic era just one bit. I just can't stand any of them. And Robbery, Assault & Battery, I don't even really remember how it sounds, but I do know I didn't particularly like it either... perhaps it would be one to hate too.

Right! I was already surprised that more people didn't have that order.
Although I suppose the PA top 10 gives a different order.

All great but I'll go Animals > ITCOTCK > SEBTP

I adore Animals not a dud on the album, dark and brooding full of angst. SEBTP is a nice album but doesn't hold a candle to the other two.

I should start listening my way through all the obscure stuff you recommend in various places; I agree quite reliably with your taste.
